Steven Gerrard Reportedly Set To Be Appointed Manager of Al-Ettifaq

Former Rangers Boss Steven Gerrard is reportedly set to be named as the new manager of Al-Ettifaq.

Gerrard was previously in charge of English Premier League side Aston Villa before he was dismissed last October.

Based on reports from Journalist Romain Molina, Steven Gerrard has touched down in Saudi Arabia as he is on the brink of penning a deal with the Al-Ettifaq.

The legendary Liverpool midfielder was linked with the job over the weekend and it now looks like all is set for him to be confirmed manager.

The commandos ended the 2022/23 Saudi Pro League season in 7th position, in a league that housed only 16 teams.

Overview on Al-Ettifaq: The potential club of Steven Gerrard

Al-Ettifaq finished the season on a high with a 0-2 victory over relegated Al-Adalah courtsey of a brace from midfielder Ghamdi in the 89th and 90+9th minute.

They have won the Saudi Professional League (level 1) on two occasions, in the 1982/83 and the 1986/87 season.

Al-Ettifaq was founded in 1945 and they play their home games at the 26,000 capacity Prince Mohamed Bin Fahd Stadium in Dammam, Saudi Arabia.

They have won the First Division (level 2) crown on one occasion and the King’s Cup twice. 

Additionally, Al-Ettifaq have won the Crown Prince Cup once, the Saudi Federations Cup three times and the Arab Club Champions Cup twice.

Steven Gerrard would be saddled with the task of taking the club back to being one of the top clubs in Saudi Arabia.

The 43-year-old could become the latest star signing to move to Saudi Arabia, with Portuguese great Cristiano Ronaldo having joined Al Nassr in January.

Karim Benzema also snubbed a one year contract extension at Real Madrid to join Al Ittihad in June and he could be joined by France International N’Golo Kante.

Steven Gerrard paused Celtic’s dominance in the Scottish Premiership

Gerrard won the Scottish Premiership title with Rangers in the 2020-21 season, halting the dominance of Celtic.

He was afterwards appointed manager of Aston Villa on the 11th of November 2021, replacing Dean Smith.

During his time in Birmingham, Gerrard won 13, drew 8 and lost 19 of his 40 games as manager.

The Englishman also recently attracted the interest of relegated Leicester City with the club eyeing a replacement for Dean Smith.

During his playing career, Steven Gerrard spent nearly two decades at Anfield before moving to the MLS to join LA Galaxy.

He made over 700 appearances for the Reds and scored 185 goals from 1998 till 2015.

The potential Al-Ettifaq manager began his coaching career with the Liverpool U18 in July 2017 before also taking up the role of the U19 in September 2017.

Gerrard left both roles in May 2018 to join Scottish giants Rangers the following month.

The Steven Gerrard and Al-Ettifaq relationship could blossom, although he would have to battle in an 18-team League next season.
