Christopher Nkunku has bid farewell to RB Leipzig, confirming his summer exit from the club to join Chelsea.
Nkunku shared a clip on his social media handle, capturing his on-field heroics for the Bundesliga side with a caption, “So good to have shared these moments with you all.”
Although Chelsea are yet to officially announce the arrival of Nkunku, the France international has already parsed his Leipzig career and is set for a new chapter with the Blues in the Premier League.
The 25-year-old has not lost his prolific stats at RB Leipzig this season but he was spotlighted in 2021/22 season when he stunned the world with a stellar outing for RB Leipzig in both Bundesliga and Champions League.
The French youngster, playing as an attacking midfielder, fired 20 Bundesliga goals in 34 appearances for Leipzig in 2021/22 season. He recorded 13 assists for the club. In Champions League, Nkunku usurped the role of a front nine, firing 7 goals for the Bundesliga side. The season indeed marked a big milestone and great leap in his career.
Before then, Nkunku struggled with single digit goals and assists for RB Leipzig but was an integral member of the Leipzig squad.
In the just-concluded season, the soon-to-be Chelsea star has not lost touch with his magic wand. He has hit double digit assists and goals for RB Leipzig but has slightly fallen below his stats last season which was his best.
In 25 Bundesliga appearances this season, he has scored 16 goals and recorded 4 assists with 3 Champions League goals.
Chelsea signed Christopher Nkunku on a precontract agreement
After his explosive campaign with RB Leipzig in 2021/22 season, Chelsea led a list of clubs milling around Leipzig to sign Nkunku but hopes of securing the services of the youngster was dashed when he penned a new four-year deal with Leipzig in 2022, extending his stay at the club.
However, Chelsea were still able to break through the brick wall of the newly-signed contract and broker a deal with Leipzig in August to sign the player.
Chelsea did not announce the signing of Nkunku with initial doubt the deal may not happen but transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed all has been signed and sealed for Nkunku’s summer move to Chelsea.
Nkunku will be the newest player in the Blues squad. A lot has changed since the pre-contract deal was reached.
Former manager, Thomas Tuchel, was in charge of the club when the deal was reached. Chelsea has gone through three different hands – Graham Potter, Bruno Saltor, and Frank Lampard – after Nkunku’s deal was sealed.
Under new manager, Mauricio Pochettino, Nkunku is expected to earn a regular start with his prolific stats and attacking style of play.
