The 2023 Under-20 FIFA World Cup will miss a series of breakout stars in the tournament which will commence on May 20.

These player will be missing out on the tournament as their clubs are reluctant to release them before the season ends.

FIFA decided to host this tournament outside of the international window before the round up of the European domestic season.

This means that clubs are not obliged under any rules to release these players so as to participate in any tournament for their country.

This is the same tournament that brought to the limelight icons like Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland. Unfortunately, this year’s edition will kick-off without some major youngsters in the world.

England national team named their squad on Thursday and the line up is missing some awesome players such as Rico Lewis (Manchester City), Lewis Hall (Chelsea), Jamie Bynoe-Gittins (Borussia Dortmund) and Samuel Illung-Junior (Juventus).

Aside these guys, other stars that will not feature in the FIFA U20 World Cup include Man United’s Alejandro Garnacho (Argentina), Chelsea’s Malo Gusto (France), Brighton’s Facundo Bounanotte (Argentina) and Sunderland’s Edouard Michut (France).

Futballnews understands that this World Cup is being staged at a similar time with its previous ones and FIFA had little choice but to run it outside of the international window and also to avoid clashes with summer competitions.

The tournament scheduled to hold between May and July include the women’s World Cup, men’s U21s Euros, men’s and women’s U17s Euros.

FIFA was tasked by the FA, along with a number of other European associations, if they could make an exception to their rules, and allow squad changes based on availability, up to the tournament kick-off.

FIFA however rejected the requests from the bodies, pointing that fairness to all countries is key and theirs is an important principle that only allows squad changes in regards to injury, up to the eve of the first game.

Politics and complications have ravaged the Under-20 World Cup in recent times.

Indonesia was stripped of the same tournament six weeks ago by FIFA following protests in the country against Israel being involved in the competition.

Argentina was made to step in as new host few days to the commencement of the tournament.

Futballnews also learned England’s U20s manager Ian Foster delayed his squad announcement. The Announcement was due on Wednesday, but delayed by 24 hours while he continued to negotiate with clubs across Europe.

Marquinhos, who plays for Arsenal, spent the second half of the season on loan at Norwich, was included in Brazil’s squad, while Etienne Camara of Huddersfield was also included in the France squad.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Dean Henderson, Fikayo Tomori, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Dominic Solanke were in the England squad that won the Under-20 World Cup for the first time in 2017.
