Manchester United flop Phil Jones has made a surprised appearance in Succession, an American satirical and comedy series, created by a British author, Jesse Armstrong.
The Manchester United defender stunned fans with a cameo in Succession that left Man United fans wondering when he will replicate same on the pitch for Manchester United.
Fans could not easily spot Jones because he was featured not as a main character in Succession but on a football match that was captured in the TV Show.
One of the main characters in the Show, Roman, was filmed sitting in a bar while a football match played on a television set.
Since the scene went viral, followers of the show have been arguing over the game that was featured in the Show, trying to find out the fixture and when it was played.
A shrewd tiktoker identified as @noproblemgambler was finally able to identify the match and when it was played.
According to @noproblemgambler, the match shown on the background in Succession TV Show was played in 2010 in Allianz Stadium in Sydney.
It was a pre-season friendly match in the Sydney Festival of Football tournament.
The two teams who played in the match were also identified as Blackburn Rovers (then a Premier League club) and Rangers ( a Scottish club)
Jones was spotted in the Blackburn Rovers team as shown in the clip and was a big-name player in the squad at that time.
Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who was in charge of the Old Trafford club then, was on the trail of Phil Jones.
Ferguson made moves to sign the Premier League player and finally succeeded in bringing him to Old Trafford a year after the Sydney Festival of Football friendly with Rangers.
The footage of Jones’ appearance on screen has made headlines since it is the first time the English footballer has been spotted on the screen of late.
Interestingly, Phil Jones is not only spotted in a recent live match but on a background clip stretching as far back as 13 years ago.
Jones joined Manchester United in 2011 after helping Blackburn Rovers finished on the 10th position in the 2009/2010 Premier League season.
He was a priority defender for Alex Ferguson after switching to the Old Trafford club.
Fast forward to 2023, Phil Jones is a shadow of himself. He has dropped down the pecking order at Manchester United.
After making 162 appearances for Manchester United, Jones’ Old Trafford career has declined significantly.
His Manchester United misfortune started in the 2019/20 Premier League season when he managed just five appearances for the club due to a niggling knee injury that ruled him out of action.
Last season, he made only four appearances for the club.
Under new Manchester United manager, Erik Ten Hag, Phil Jones has been axed from Manchester United matchday squads.
His four-year contract with £3,900,000 annual salary at Manchester United will expire at the end of this season.
As things stands, it is evident the English footballer is on the exit lane from Manchester United as the club will not renew his contract.
Contract renewal talks have already began with some key Man United players whose contract will expire at the end of the season. The likes of David de Gea, Marcus Rashford, and others are on table for contract renewal talks but Phil Jones is out of the list.
