A section of Chelsea players are set to receive huge pay cuts after their abysmal campaign, with some of them facing a 30 percent pay reduction.
Chelsea are passing through an horrendous season and they are 11th in the Premier League table with only 39 points accrued so far in the league.
They have been additionally knocked out of all cup competitions this campaign in spite of splashing the cash outrageously in the past one year.
The Blues have pumped in close to £600 million in new additions since Todd Boehly’s consortium finalized the acquisition of the club in the summer of 2022.
Chelsea have also had four different coaches this campaign and based on reports by The Telegraph, Chelsea’s new administrators put clauses into deals to guard themselves if they couldn’t qualify for the UEFA Champions League this season.
That panic is now said to be a reality for Chelsea owner Todd Boehly and the West London side are highly unlikely to make it to a Champions League spot, as they are 17 points behind Newcastle United who sit in 4th with 21 points still available this season.
Do Chelsea have the opportunity to qualify for the UCL through winning the competition?
Chelsea had a chance to qualify for the UEFA Champions League by winning this season’s competition but they were knocked out in the quarter-finals after losing to Real Madrid.
The Blues were defeated 4-0 by the Spanish side on aggregate after suffering 2-0 losses on both legs.
Boehly gave himself some cushion after including a fresh bonus system that contained a Champions League reduction clause inserted in deals.
Previous owner Roman Abramovic did not include a reduction clause for not qualifying to the Champions League in contracts as he opted to pay bonuses for winning titles.
Not all players of the West London side will be affected by the clause, like individuals who penned their current deal with Chelsea under the Abramovic dispensation.
Those Chelsea players not affected include Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Mateo Kovacic and Christian Pulisic.
But the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Mhykailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke, Reece James, Cesar Azpilicueta and Ben Chilwell would be looking keenly at their salary.
The Blues have issued some staggering deals under Todd Boehly.
Enzo Fernandez, Mudryk alongside Madueke all have above eight years left on their existing contracts, while Benoit Badiashile and Malo Gusto are set to stay at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2030.
The American owner of Chelsea has faced criticism for Chelsea’s woeful campaign.
A tweet from Gary Neville when questioned about Chelsea’s transfer dealings last August read: “It’s just scattergun and unsuitable, I doubt this approach will go down well.”
The former Manchester United defender appears to have been proven right as Boehly replaced Thomas Tuchel with Graham Potter in September, just few days after acquiring Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for the German tactician. That move didn’t turn out well when Potter was fired by Chelsea in March 2023.
Graham Potter’s former assistant Bruno Saltor took charge of a match before Frank Lampard was brought in as caretaker boss earlier in April.
Lampard has since his appointment lost all four of his matches in charge of Chelsea and now holds a shocking record of one win and 14 losses in his last 17 games as a manager.
