Timo Werner has credited the manager of Chelsea football club, Frank Lampard, for his decision to join the club this summer. He described Lampard as the main reason why he joined the club.
The German international is the latest signing of the Premier League club. Though he would not play any competitive match until the 2020-2021 season commences in September, the former RB Leipzig talisman has started training with the club.
The 24-year-old centre-forward who joined Chelsea from German Bundesliga side RB Leipzig at the end of the 2019-2020 season in Germany, said he and Lampard spoke extensively about Chelsea’s system and the coach convinced him that he would fit into it.
“He [Lampard] was the main point. We talked a lot about things like system, like how he wants to play and sees me playing, and how the system fits me,” Werner told Chelsea’s official website.
“He’s a really nice guy who not only told me what he wants from me as a player because he wants to help me.”
This has clear the doubts that Timo Werner who was instrumental in securing a 3rd place finish for RB Leipzig in the just concluded season after scoring 28 goals and making 8 assists in the league, might not be that effective in Chelsea’s set-up.
Timo Werner’s little dream
While acknowledging the impact of the likes of Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Petr Cech as players who led the club to win their first Champions League title during the 2011-2012 season, the German star says he wants to be a part of Chelsea’s new era.
“It is like a little dream for me but I want to become, not the same player like them, but I want to be part of a new era here so I will play to try to give my best.”

More so, Timo Werner revealed that he is a really fast-player who would definitely fit into the Premier League’s system which he described as a league where clubs play very fast football.
“The style of the Premier League is very fast and my speciality is that I am really fast so I think it is perfect for me to play here. t is another league in another country so I can improve myself to bring it to another level.”
The German Bundesliga second-highest goalscorer for the 2019-2020 season, joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig for a transfer fee worth £45 million. The deal will last until 30th June 2025.
Based on conflicting reports, the German has become the highest-paid player at the club as the deal will earn him £270,000-per-week which is £120,000-per-week more than the club’s goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga who used to be the highest earner at the club.
According to a German publication, Bild, besides Timo Werner’s whopping £270,000-a-week wages, the German international will also earn £10 million signing-on bonus as a Chelsea star.
Aside Werner, Chelsea have also signed former Ajax’s talisman Hakim Ziyech, the Moroccan has also resumed training with his new club. Chelsea’s hope to add 21-year-old Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz to their young squad this summer which will make them a team to beat in the coming season.
