In the 24th minute of the Euro qualifiers between England and Ukraine on Sunday, the Ukrainian fans threw paper planes into the air, most of which landed on the pitch.

On one side of the Wembley Stadium, Ukrainian fans were waving flags, and on the other side, the fans were singing to mock Putin, who invaded their country in February 2022.

The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, wants the West to supply him with jets to help him fight off Russia’s attacks.

The Ukrainians backed their president by distributing a song sheet with “No Russia Bombers” lyrics.

The fans used the paper to make those planes.

The fans also sent a plea to United Kingdom Prime Minister to give them the US F-16 fighter jets Zelensky craves for.

These fighter jets were used during the Second World War against the Nazi
Army.

The fans’ call came after the English and Ukrainian players decided to pay tribute to Ukraine by holding the country’s flag and clamoring for peace between the two nations.

Record-breaker Harry Kane led his teammates in sending the message of peace.

Bukayo Saka scored a screamer as England went ahead to win the match 2-0.

Cause of the Russia-Ukraine War

Russia’s “special military operation” has been perpetrating ruins and destructions in Ukraine for one year now.

The war continues to record devastating casualties and resulted in the mass displacement of millions of blameless Ukraine citizens.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin started the war by claiming Russia’s neighbor needed to be “demilitarised and de-Nazified.”

This claim, however, seems baseless as the ulterior motive of Mr. Putin’s warped bid is to restore the territory lost back to Moscow following the collapse of the Soviet Union and he has continued to defy law and ordinance to get this done.

Figure of casualties.

Russia’s heavy launch against an independent state has seen Mr. Putin’s soldiers engaging brutally in the battle for Bakhmut, the Ukrainian city which Russia has spent months trying to capture.

The conflict had begun more than seven months ago and is the longest battle of the war so far.

However, neither the Russian nor Ukrainian armies have released any official casualty figures for the ongoing war in Bakhmut, or elsewhere, but the mostly abandoned city has been reduced to a slaughterhouse.

Last week, Russia claimed more than 220 Ukrainian service members are wasted in 24 hours in the battle for Bakhmut.

Meanwhile, according to Western officials’ estimation early this month, between 20,000 and 30,000 Russian troops had been killed or injured in Bakhmut since last summer.

It’s believed that the high number of Russian casualties may be the central reason Ukraine has not withdrawn from the city.

However, it’s disheartening to see the city of Bakhmut where about 70,000 inhabitants lived before the invasion, be reduced to a few thousand.

And for the few thousand left behind, including elderly and disabled people, their conditions are pathetic.

They spend almost the whole day in underground shelters because of intense Russian shellings.

The Russian-Ukraine war has recorded tens of thousands of deaths since last year’s invasion.

Ukraine’s effort and aid from external bodies.

Last week, Oleksandr Syrsky, commander of Ukraine’s ground forces, claimed that the situation in Bakhmut, the Ukrainian city is “stabilizing” owing that the Russian troops near Bakhmut were “exhausted”.

According to reports, battle tanks from the US, Britain, and Germany which were being supplied for the first time to Ukraine have been helpful.

And Ukraine’s President, Mr. Volodymyr Zelensky toured London, Paris, and Brussels in early February 2023 to request fighter jets.

The bid for the jets to be sent alongside the battle tanks is to counter the Russian aerial threat.

However, members of Britain’s defense establishment turned down the request base on technical know-how doubts.

The former UK national security adviser Peter Ricketts said that the appeal for planes is “not going to work” because UK jets need “very specialized ground crews”.

Ukrainians have backed their president in pleading for fighter jets as the panacea for this war appears to be an unflinching struggle.
