Wout Weghorst, Man United striker, maintains that he is “doing a good job” for the squad despite criticism from Paul Scholes and Richard Keys.
The Netherlands International who is 30 years old, has been a regular starter for United since joining from Championship team Burnley in January on a six-month loan agreement.
However, Weghorst has played 18 matches for his new team across all competitions, including starting in the Carabao Cup final win over Newcastle, which was the first trophy ever in his professional career.
The former Wolfsburg player has won praises for consistently displaying excellent hold-up play and hard ethic despite less goals and assist contribution.
Nonetheless, Weghorst has seen his share of criticism from several fans and lover of football, especially after Liverpool mauling.
Just after Liverpool dismantled Manchester United 7-0 earlier this month, TV host Richard Keys unleashed a harsh critique of the Dutch attacker.
Richard wrote on his online blog that: “It’s his [Ten Hag’s] decision to keep playing Wout Weghorst, It’s not Weghorst’s fault, but he has to be the worst player I’ve ever seen in a United jersey.”
“He’s a bang ordinary No.9, who couldn’t get in a struggling Burnley team, but what on earth possesses Seven Hag to think he’s a sumptuous 10? One who can ‘wear the tuxedo’ as the Americans say.”
“Come on, It’s a joke and the manager has got to give up pretending that Weghorst has got something to offer.”
Richard Keys also added: “He’s not a ‘pressing monster’. He doesn’t ‘make runs’ because he can’t run. And he doesn’t score goals. You can’t start him – push Fernandes left and leave £80m Sancho on the bench. Too clever Erik. Far too clever.”
Paul Scholes, United Legend, asserted that Weghorst lacks the abilities necessary to spend more time at Old Trafford past the summer after that match against Liverpool.
Yet, the former Burnley striker is happy with his stay at the Theatre of Dreams. He even claimed that he is doing an “excellent job” for the Reds.
During the international break, Weghorst reaffirmed the aforementioned, saying: “That’s a lot of matches and it shows the trust in me.”
“It also shows that I am doing a good job for the team. That was the thing I wanted when I came here – to contribute and try and help the club to be successful to win trophies. We have one now.”
“We have two more to go with the Europa League and FA Cup, and we want to get as high as possible in the table and definitely top four for the Champions League.”
“So it just shows me that I am being part of it. And being part of us being successful and that appreciation, that’s a good thing.”
Weghorst stated that he’s fulfilling his ambition of playing for the 13-time Premier League champions while on international duty for the Netherlands this week in an interview with Veronica Inside.
“Am I living a dream? Certainly. In my opinion, this is the absolute top and one of the largest clubs in the world”, he said.
“I feel like I’m very much in my place. I am super happy, very happy. I play at a beautiful level and can be of value as a basic player. That makes me a happy man.”

Wout François Maria Weghorst (born 7 August 1992) is a Dutch professional footballer who currently plays for Premier League side Manchester United on loan from EFL Championship club Burnley, as well as the Netherlands national team.
In Emmen, Weghorst began playing professionally in the second division of Dutch football. Prior to joining VfL Wolfsburg in 2018, he had previously played for Heracles Almelo and AZ in the Eredivisie.
He was signed by Burnley in January 2022 for a sum of £12 million after scoring 70 goals in 144 games for Wolfsburg.
Weghorst spent time on loan at Turkish Süper Lig club Beşiktaş and now Manchester United after Burnley was relegated from the Premier League.
Before making his senior international debut in March 2018, Weghorst earned one appearance for the Netherlands under-21 team in 2014.
He played for the Netherlands at both the UEFA Euro 2020 and the FIFA World Cup 2022, when he scored twice against Argentina in the quarterfinal.

“I think I said, ‘I really like number 24, he’s very good!’ But I didn’t even know where he played! I had to go and search on my phone! As I watched more games, I told my family and friends that I really liked him a lot. And then he came to Chelsea!”
“I told Enzo that I had liked him at the World Cup. He’s a good guy, I’m waiting for him to cook me a barbecue.”
“He is very young, but he is very talented with the ball and he is intelligent. He’s still adapting but he’s already played some good games. We have [signed] a great midfielder.”
Since his record-breaking mid-season transfer to Chelsea, Fernandez has had a quick adjustment to life as a footballer. The 22-year-old has made just seven Premier League outings and already has two assists to his name.
