Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola ended his Manchester City Vs RB Leipzig post-match press conference on a hilarious note.
The former Bayern Munich and Barcelona manager admitted he has failed in the Champions League at Manchester City despite a resounding and comprehensive 7-0 victory over RB Leipzig at Etihad.
After settling for a 1-1 draw in Germany in first-leg, Pep Guardiola secured his third 7-0 champions league victory with the help of deadly Norwegian goal poacher Erling Haaland.
The former Borussia Dortmund ace hauled in five goals in 57 minutes with Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne completing the rout.
Speaking in a post-match press conference after the win, Pep Guardiola played down the 7-0 win over Leipzig and poked fun at his Champions League trophy drought at Manchester City.
The 52-year-old said he is a failure in the Champions League and his reason for being a failure was quite hilarious as the outrageous scoreline against Leipzig.
On why he said he is a failure in the Champions League, Guardiola said one of his idols, Julia Roberts, a renowned Spanish singer, and celebrity, had chosen to visit Manchester United at Old Trafford in 2016 instead of Manchester City when she came to England with her family.
According to him, Julia Roberts snubbed him and Manchester City although they have been better than Manchester United in recent years. Hence, he will be a failure even though he wins the Champions League three times in a row for Manchester City because of the disappointment.
‘I am a failure in the Champions League,’ Guardiola said. ‘If win the Champions League three times in a row I will be a failure.
‘I have three idols in my life. Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and Julia Roberts. These are my three idols.
‘Julia Roberts years ago came to Manchester – not in the 90s when Sir Alex (Ferguson) was winning titles and titles and titles. She came in the period where we were better than United, in these four or five years, right?
‘And she went to visit Man United. She didn’t come to see us. That’s why even if I win the Champions League it will not compare to the fact that Julia Roberts came to Manchester and didn’t come to see us.
‘Even if I win the Champions League it will not compare to this disappointment I had.’
Julian Roberts attended a Manchester United Vs West Ham Premier League match in November 2016 with her husband and three children who are said to be die-hard fans of the club.
After the game, the celebrity singer took to the pitch with his family and met Wayne Rooney who was plying his trade with the Red Devils that year.
She took some shots with Rooney and Michael Carrick with her children frolicking on the pitch.
Despite settling for a 1-1 draw with West Ham in the game, having the celebrity attend the game was special for the Red Devils but disappointing for Pep Guardiola.
Manchester United reacts with witty post
In an apparent move to aim a dig at Pep Guardiola after his Julia Roberts’ comment, Manchester United took to their social media handle to post three throwback slides of Julia Roberts’ visit to Manchester United with a short witty caption, “Throwing it back to when Julia Roberts visited Old Trafford.”
Pep Guardiola is yet to win the Champions League with Manchester City despite dominating domestic league competitions just as he did at Bayern Munich before arriving at Etihad in the 2016/17 season.
However, he has led the club to the quarterfinals of the competition this season and is among the top favorites to win the competition along with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
