Racists have continued targeting Crystal Palace winger, Wilfred Zaha after Police arrested a 12-year-old over the act last week.

Also abused last week was Sheffield United’s David McGoldrick after helping his club to a 3-0 win over Chelsea at Bramall Lane.

As part of the ways of fighting the ugly trend, the Professional Footballers’ Association held talks with social media companies.

Speaking on the development, Iffy Onuora, the players’ union’s coaching and equalities executive, confirmed that there have been productive talks with Instagram, Facebook and Twitter over the situation.

“There’s an awful lot of work that still needs to be done,” Onuora said.

On his part, Sheffield United manager, Chris Wilder calls for more action from “people in power” to tackle racist abuse on social media.

Onuora further stated that this shows that there is still a lot of work to be done educationally.

“It is a big challenge, regarding social media. If you compare other media: Print journalism has been around centuries – we have got to a stage where they are regulated. Social media is barely out of its teens. It’s a phenomenon relatively recently in history.

“We’re not looking to close down something that has been a force for good but with anything that has assumed the degree of power that it has now, there’s a responsibility with that.

“That all comes with regulation. Unfortunately, social media can’t be any different from other media and we need to look at how we do that.”

Meanwhile, Zaha has reacted to the message in a video posted on his social media page.

The Ivorian said the social network firms should ensure adequate details of anyone using the apps are taken as part of the regulation to curb the ugly trend.

“They should not be allowed to make an account without proper details because that is what cowards do,” he pointed out.
