Norwich City has been relegated again from the English Premier League. This is the 5th time the club will be sent back to the second tier of English football having made an impressive start this season.

  • Norwich City has become the first team to be relegated from the Premier League on five separate occasions.

Knowing that the club would be relegated eventually, the team’s captain, Alex Tettey had in an interview said it was inevitable judging from the club’s position on the log.

With 21 points from 35 games, Daniel Farke’s men know that it will be hard to scale the hurdles while others just above the red zone are looking for points that will take them further away from the drop zone.

It was West Ham that finally threw the soccer punch with a 4-0 victory at Carrow Road that sends them parking from the top English flight, with all goals coming from Michail Antonio. The defeat was Norwich‘s seventh in a row.

No regret about the season – Farke

Speaking after the club’s relegation was confirmed, Farke said he has no regrets about how the Carrow Road outfit went about the season, upon relegation.

With their relegation confirmed, Farke said the club’s future is bright. To him, this is the case because the club has no financial pressures to contend with.

Farke, who was appointed Norwich boss in May 2017, expressed his disappointment over the club’s status, noting that the outcome was not expected as they wanted to be the odds again.

Having joined the Canaries and took them to eighth in the Championship table, he took them to another 14h-place finish the next season before winning the Championship in 2018-19.

“When I came here we needed to develop young players and sell them to keep the club going. We were able to do this and we sold James Maddison.

“Then the second season no-one expected anything but we were able to stage a miracle. We won the Championship title with a special brand of football. We were not able to add the third miracle in a row against all odds.”

How Norwich got relegated from the Premier League

With a winning goal from Jamal Lewis against former champions, Leicester on 28 February, shortly before the coronavirus break, the Canaries were just four points from safety with 10 games remaining.

But their woeful performances since the restart were their undoing after they lost all six league games by an aggregate score of 15-1.

Farke had opted to keep the core of last season’s team that finished with five points above Sheffield United when they won the Championship, with nine of the 11 players that started against West Ham being the ones on the field in the final Championship game of last season against Villa.

While insisting that the Canaries went about the season in the right way, he said the chances of his team surviving the drop in the Premier League was 5 percent.

“If you have luck and no injuries then you have a chance. When we are 100% we are competitive but when it’s 96 or 97% then it sometimes looks like men against boys.

“The club is able to pay for all the sins of the past. We are able to invest in our infrastructure for the long term. I was fully aware and committed for doing things this way.

“Of course we’re disappointed but it was the right decision for this club and I always was happy to stick to this plan.”
