The Premier League have spent a whooping £1.78bn in the transfer market – three times more than any football league in the world in 2022.

Data from FIFA on international men’s transfers brought to the spotlight the staggering figures invested by Premier League clubs in brokering new deals and buying new players in 2022

Second on the chart of football leagues that have invested heavily in transfers is Italian Serie A.

According to the report, Italian clubs have spent far less than Premier League clubs, but are second in the chart with £543m dolled out in the transfer market in 2022.

A breakdown of the data shows a total of £5.24bn has been spent with the top 10 most expensive moves accounting for 12.5% of the total spending.

Insights on top 10 most expensive deals

The Premier League is not left out on clubs with the most expensive deals in 2022. There are four Premier League representatives on the chart. However, La Liga signed the highest number of most expensive players so far, with Real Madrid’s signing of Aurelien Tchouameni topping the list.

The France midfielder was reported to have moved to the Spanish club in a deal worth about 80m euros (£68.3m) plus about 20m euros (£17m) in add-ons.

Liverpool followed La Liga giants Real Madrid on the list of clubs with the most expensive signing after they signed Darwin Nunez for £64m with a potential rise to £85m if add-ons are included.

On the third position in the top 10 most expensive signings that have shot the Premier League to the limelight is Manchester United’s deal with Ajax for Antony which cost the Red Devils £82m. Fourth on the list is another expensive deal by the Red Devils for Casemiro.

Manchester United bought Casemiro for £60m from Real Madrid.

With regards to Europe’s biggest spenders this season, Barcelona is second on the list while five of the top seven are Premier League clubs, skyrocketing Premier League’s total transfer spending in the said year to £1.78bn.

Premier League clubs on the list of biggest spenders in 2022 include Liverpool (3rd), Newcastle United (5th) West Ham (6th), Wolverhampton Wanderers (7th), and Manchester City (9th).

Top 10 Leagues With Highest Transfer Spending in 2022

After the the EPL and Serie A, Bundesliga are second on the chart of highest spending clubs in 2022. They have spent £424.42m.

While Barcelona and Real Madrid are among the top clubs with top 10 biggest signings in 2022, a relatively lesser spending power by other La Liga clubs have dragged down La Liga’s total spending, bringing them down to fourth on the chart below Serie A and Bundesliga.
