Cristiano Ronaldo, the captain of Portugal, confirmed that he had “several possibilities” to sign with top clubs before joining Al Nassr of Saudi Arabia.
He left Manchester United after a contentious interview in which he criticized the team and joined Al Nassr as a free agent on Friday.
The 37-year-old claimed that clubs in Brazil, Australia, the United States, and Portugal have made bids to him.
Cristiano Ronaldo respond to critics
The former Manchester United player, in his first news conference said: “In Europe my work is done.”
“I won everything, I played for the most important clubs in Europe and now it is a new challenge in Asia.”
As we have reported earlier, Ronaldo is expected to sign a contract that pays him more than £177 million annually through 2025.
“As nobody knows, I can say now I had many opportunities in Europe, many clubs in Brazil, Australia, the US, even in Portugal, many clubs tried to sign me,” he said.
Ronaldo continued, “but I gave my word for this club for the opportunity to develop the football and all the amazing parts of this country.”
Applause and cries of the “Siu” celebration for the five-time winner of the Ballon d’Or, were heard as he spoke. He responded to a club representative’s queries but declined to take any from media.
Ronaldo might make his debut on Thursday against Al-Ta’ee, depending on his fitness. If not, the Saudi Pro League’s top team might feature him against Al-Shabab on Saturday.
Ronaldo gets a warm welcome
During his unveiling as Al-Nassr’s player, Cristiano Ronaldo responded to his detractors, and in his first meeting with his new teammates, he backed up his words.
Following the signing of his eye-watering contract with the Saudi giants on Tuesday, the former Manchester United great was introduced in front of adoring fans in Riyadh.
With his decision to leave European football and negotiate a contract worth an estimated £177 million annually in the Middle East, Ronaldo has been accused of pursuing money.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s assertion that his work in Europe is complete seems to put the kibosh on a potential future transfer to Newcastle United.
In a fight against time, Cristiano Ronaldo hopes to debut for Al-Nassr on Thursday.
If he is well enough, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is expected to make his debut against Al-Ta’ee on Thursday as a substitute. Al-Nassr supporters are eager to see him in action.
“I have the opportunity to say me and my family, we want to say thank you to all of you for your welcome,” Ronaldo Said.
Before leaving the stage and leaving the pitch, he led the crowd in a cheer.
The children of Cristiano Ronaldo and his partner Georgina entered the field. All of the kids were wearing Al-Nassr jerseys as they were welcomed.
Ronaldo appeared to be about to throw another ball into the crowd when he noticed a small child at the front and jogged up to give it to her.
At this point, he signed a ball and launched it into the throng. Young people from Al-Nassr joined Ronaldo for a snapshot.
Along with the new signing, members of the women’s squad were present, and the fans never stopped cheering.
He also reiterates his willingness to assist both men’s and women’s football in Saudi Arabia.
Garcia alters his stance
After Cristiano Ronaldo was presented by the Saudi Arabian club, Al-Nassr manager Rudi Garcia emphasized that he thought it was a “honor” to be in charge of the Portuguese superstar.
On Friday, Ronaldo sealed a sensational transfer to the Saudi Arabian club, where he would make an estimated £177 million annually.
The agreement was reached when Ronaldo dissolved his partnership with Manchester United amicably in November as a result of a shocking interview with Piers Morgan.
