The UEFA Super Cup is an annual super cup football match organized by UEFA and contested by the winners of the two main European club competitions; the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.

European champions Real Madrid are taking on UEFA Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt in the traditional opener to the new UEFA club competition season tonight.

The match will take place at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium today, Wednesday, August 10, the kick-off time is 21:00 CET.

2021/22 UEFA Champions Real Madrid

Real Madrid will face Eintracht Frankfurt in an official match for the first time since 1960, when Los Blancos annihilated the Germans in the European Cup Final 7-3 in what was one of the most famous matches in football history. That night, Alfredo di Stefano scored a hat-trick, while Ferenc Puskas scored four goals for the winners, though Richard Kress briefly put Frankfurt in front and Erwin Stein struck twice for the German side in the second half.

Real Madrid coach, Carlo Ancelotti is expected to play his ‘Gala XI’, same lineup that won him the Champions League against Liverpool last season — as he believes this game is an extension of previous season.

Probable line-ups
Real Madrid (4-3-3): Courtois; Carvajal, Militao, Alaba, Mendy; Casemiro, Kroos, Modric; Valverde, Vinicius, Benzema

Eintracht Frankfurt (3-4-2-1): Trapp; Touré, Tuta, Ndicka; Knauff, Sow, Rode, Lenz; Götze, Lindstrøm, Borré

Match Prediction

According to Real Madrid reporter Graham Hunter, he recounts that the match between the two European champions would be a tough one and “bumps and bruises can occur”.

However, Carlo Ancelotti has confidently boasted about the UEFA Champions’ preparedness to win the title tonight stating clearly that firstly, he’ll try hard, match fitness permitting, to reward the XI who started and won the Champions League final against Liverpool by fielding the squad from the outset. And, secondly, Real Madrid’s starters and substitutes must treat this historic rematch with Frankfurt with ruthless seriousness.

2021/22 Europa League Champions Frankfurt

Meanwhile, Frankfurt reporter, James Thorogood recounted how Frankfurt were humiliated with a 6-1 loss to Bayern Munich in their Bundesliga opener this season despite their comfortable win in the first round of the German Cup in a 4-0 victory against FC Magdeburg.

However, Frankfurt coach, Oliver Glasne is optimistic that his team could win the title against Madrid tonight as they won the Europa League, he said: “This is the reward for our incredible season, to face a Real Madrid side that have incredible quality and last season knocked out some of the best teams in Europe.

“What we proved in the Europa League last season is that there’s always a chance and it’s the same tomorrow. We’re going to play with confidence because we know what we’re capable of.”

Moreover, Kevin Trapp, Frankfurt goalkeeper has vowed to give it all it takes to win the trophy tonight: “Of course I have butterflies in my stomach because I’m looking forward to taking on Real Madrid in the Super Cup. My job is to keep the balls out, so my job hasn’t really changed. I know there’s going to be a lot of quality coming my way, whether it be Vinícius [Júnior] or [Karim] Benzema, but we’re ready.

On the other hand, Real Madrid coach, Carlo Ancelotti and the club’s forward Karim Benzema both disclosed that their strong team spirit and the unwavering ambition that won them the UEFA Champions League will do the same tonight.

Carlo Ancelotti: “Was last season the most amazing of my career? Perhaps so, yes. I’d never coached a team to a league and Champions League double. It’s down to the spirit, attitude, quality, enthusiasm of my players that we qualified to be here by winning the Champions League.”

While Karim Benzema said: “..we’re brimming with the ambition to win it – there’s no other option when you play for Real Madrid. What’s extra special is that to get here you have to win the Champions League. Now the task is to simply keep on winning.”

As the two European Champions clash tonight, the duo fans and the world generally are on their toes keenly anticipating what their fates would be as another European football history would be written at Helsinki Olympic Stadium tonight. Would Frankfurt allow history be repeated and be defeated tonight by Madrid or give it all their best to clitch the UEFA Super cup? Well, Kick-off time is 20:00.
