The chief executive of German Football League (DFL) Christian Seifert says Bundesliga is ready to resume on May 9 if Government authorities give the green light for the league to commence.

The German Football League is responsible for the organisation of the Bundesliga and the second division of the league.

As of April 23, Germany has recorded 5,575 coronavirus related deaths and 153,393 confirmed cases which forced the government of the country to declare a lockdown.

Like other countries in the world, every social activity has been halted including football but the German Football League has been having a series of meetings to see how the league can resume so that the season can be completed.

Recall that Uefa has urged all league bodies across Europe to ensure that their football season is not abandoned. The European football governing body threatened that any league in Europe which fails to complete its season would not be recognised in European competitions.

If Bundesliga Starts on 9 May, DFL is ready

In line with that directive, the DFL had a meeting on Thursday to look for a way to resume the league which should have ended before June 30th if not because of the outbreak of the pandemic.

“If we start on 9 May, we are ready. If it is later, we will be ready again,” Christian Seifert said on Thursday.

“For us, what is decisive is what the politicians will decide. It is not for us to decide when.

“Games without spectators are not what we want – but at the moment the only thing that seems feasible.”

As it stands, the question is not whether the matches will be played behind closed doors or not; it is a question of whether the government will give the go-ahead for the commencement of the league or not.

The hope of resuming on April 30th as the German Football League once projected, has been lost a long time ago especially when the government came up with a new policy that no large crowd of people would be allowed anywhere in Germany until October 24.

Even without spectators at stadia, players from opposing teams, coaches from opposing teams, medical personnel, security, match officials, and other officials have already amounted to a crowd.

So the May 9 possible resumption of Bundesliga might just end up being another failed projection just like previous projections except if something extraordinary happens between now and May 1st.
