Calvin Ramsay, a product of Aberdeen FC youth system is Liverpool’s third signing this summer after grabbing the signatures of £64 million Uruguay striker Darwin Nunez from Benfica and £5 million Fulham forward Fabio Carvalho.
The 18-year-old Scottish right-back who made his name in the Scottish Premiership last season, signed a five-year deal with Liverpool earlier today, June 19, 2022. This means that the youngster is expected to stay at the Premier League club until June 30, 2027.
Futballnews gathered that the Premier League club paid an initial £4.2 million to Aberdeen before they could seal the deal with Calvin Ramsay. Afterward, Liverpool are expected to pay potential add-ons of £2.5 million.
Interestingly, the Scottish Premiership club succeeded in adding a 17.5% sell-on clause to Ramsay’s deal which means that the club will get a cut from any amount Liverpool sell the Scottish under-21 star in the future.
Also, Futballnews gathered that Liverpool’s coach Jurgen Klopp is not planning to send Calvin Ramsay on loan in the coming season. Hence, the youngster is expected to join Liverpool’s senior team when the club’s pre-season kick-off in the coming days.
“I’m just buzzing and it’s a dream come true really to be here,” Calvin Ramsay told Liverpool’s official website in his first interview as a Liverpool player.
“It was a dream come true to play for Aberdeen, and now to be at one of the biggest, if not the biggest club in the world, it’s a massive achievement and I’m looking forward to trying to show the fans what I’ve got.”
Why did Calvin Ramsay choose Liverpool over other suitors?
After a stunning performance in the 2021-2022 season at Aberdeen, Calvin Ramsay was named young player of the year by the Scottish Football Writers’ Association in April.
Aside from winning an individual award for his top-notch performance last season, his performance attracted suitors across the world even though he had two seasons left in his contract with Aberdeen. At the end of the day, Liverpool succeeded in grabbing his signature.
After signing for the Premier League club, Calvin Ramsay claimed that he decided to join Liverpool because the club often give young players like him an opportunity to shine.
“There’s obviously a pathway here,” he said. “That’s one of the reasons I chose it as well. It’s not just a massive club, they give young players chances in the first team.
“So if I can come in in pre-season, put my mark down, then there’s no reason why I can’t push to get in the first-team squad.”
“As soon as I heard the speculation from Liverpool, I just wanted to get it done, I knew that’s the club that I wanted to go to.” 👌
