The manager of Real Madrid, Zinedine Zidane, has blamed himself for the unexpected loss the Spanish La Liga giants suffered in the hands of Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday, October 21.

Shakhtar Donetsk became the first Ukrainian club since 1999 to beat Real Madrid in a Champions League match and they did that in style right inside Real Madrid‘s home ground, Alfredo di Stefano training ground.

The visitors took the lead as early as in the 29th minute of the match through the boots of Cardoso Lemos Martins. Shakhtar Donetsk doubled their lead, thanks to the own goal scored by Raphael Varane in the 33rd minute. Before the end of the first half, Real Madrid conceded the third goal, this time around, it came through the boots of Manor Solomon in the 42nd minute of the match.

Hence the first half of the Champions League match ended 0-3 in favor of Shakhtar Donetsk. The second half started differently for the visitors. This time around, it was Real Madrid that were trying to get back into the game.

Real Madrid‘s effort started paying off in the 54th minute of the match when the club’s iconic midfielder Luka Modric scored to become Madrid’s fourth player to score for the club in the Champions League at the age of 35 and above after Alfredo Di Stefano, Ferenc Puskas and Paco Gento.

In the 59th minute, Vinícius Júnior scored the fastest goal by a substitute in a Champions League match (15 seconds after coming on) to make it two for Real Madrid which gave the team the hope of either drawing the match or overturning the tie. However, the two goals Madrid scored ended up as consolation goals.

Before the referee ended the match, Federico Valverde scored at the tail end of the match to make it 3-3 but the Video Assistant Referee disallowed the goal for offside. Hence, it ended 2-3 in favor of Shakhtar Donetsk.

“I did not see the team as I wanted and when you do not see the team as you wanted it is your fault,” Zinedine Zidane said after the match.

“It’s a bad game, a bad night. I’m the coach and it’s up to me to find the solution.

“We deserve the criticism, all of us, and me first. Luckily we reacted in the second half because they don’t deserve that, they are champions and it bothers me.

“I am responsible and I have to look for solutions because that cannot happen.”

This is Real Madrid’s second consecutive loss in the 2020-2021 season. Recall that the club was stunned by newly-promoted La Liga side Cádiz 0-1 in a Liga match less than five days before their meeting with Shakhtar Donetsk. The next big test waiting for Madrid is the first El Classico of the season against their bitter-rivals Barcelona on Saturday, October 24 at 15:00.
