Luis Suarez cried uncontrollably after he was substituted during the UEFA Champions League group stage game between Atletico Madrid and Porto on Tuesday, December 7.

Luis Suarez followed Atletico Madrid to Portugal to take on Porto in a must-win Champions League game. The two clubs needed to win the game to stand a chance of qualifying for the next round of the tournament.

Unfortunately for Suarez, he developed muscle pain that he could not continue to play with. Hence, he was substituted in the 13th minute.

The 34-year-old Uruguayan striker could not control his tears because he thought his absence in the game might make it more difficult for Atletico Madrid to get the needed victory.

He was helped to the bench in tears and watched in tears in most parts of the first half of the Champions League game.

Fortunately for Atletico Madrid, Porto were not able to break the club’s defense throughout the first 45 minutes of the game.

All the most interesting aspects of the game happened in the second half. The biggest moment for the away team happened in the 56th minute when Antoine Griezmann scored the opener.

Things almost got worse for Atletico Madrid when Yannick Carrasco was shown the red card in the 67th minute.

Three minutes later, it was the turn of Porto’s players to be shown the red card. First, it was Wendell that was sent off in the 70th minute, followed by goalkeeper Agustín Marchesín in the 75th minute.

The fact that Porto played the remaining minutes of the second half with one player less left Atletico Madrid with more room to dominate the game.

In the 90th minute and injury time, Atletico Madrid scored two goals courtesy of Angel Correa and Rodrigo De Paul’s late minutes strikes. Sergio Oliveira scored the consolation goal for Porto in injury time from the spot-kick.

The 3-1 win over Porto took Atletico Madrid to the second spot in Group B with 7 points in 6 games, 11 points away from the first-placed Liverpool football club.

While Porto qualified for the Europa League, thanks to Liverpool’s 2-1 win over bottom-placed AC Milan.

Now that Atletico Madrid have made it to the next round of the UEFA Champions League campaign, their attention will be on how to make Luis Suarez recover speedily from his muscle injury.

The Uruguayan striker is needed in Atletico Madrid’s effort to defend their Spanish La Liga title. They currently sit in the 4th spot with 29 points in 15 games, 10 points away from first placed Real Madrid.

So far this season, Suarez has scored 8 goals and provided 2 assists in 21 games in all competitions.
