West Ham United have turned down an offer of £90 million from Manchester City for Declan Rice earlier today, June 27.
The offer from City is believed to have included an £80 million guaranteed payment and £10 million in bonuses.
Why did West Ham United reject the offer from Manchester City for Declan Rice?
West Ham United had to reject Manchester City’s offer for Rice because it is below the asking price of £100 million.
Arsenal are making efforts at sending a third bid for Declan Rice, but they will have to hasten their footsteps in order not to be caught napping by Manchester City.
The Gunners have had their two previous bids for the Englishman rejected as it didn’t meet the amount demanded by the Hammers.
The amount presented in Arsenal’s second bid for Declan Rice is also the exact offer tabled by Manchester City, although different terms and payment structure.
Arsenal presented an offer of £75 million guaranteed payment and £15 million in add-ons for the England International.
The current contract of Declan Rice at West Ham United expires in 2024, but there is an option for a further year which could see him remain at the club till 2025.
After their Europa Conference League final triumph over Fiorentina on the 7th of June, Chairman David Sullivan confirmed that Declan Rice will exit the club this summer.
However, the Hammers will not sanction his sale until a team meets the asking price demanded.
Manchester City are eyeing Rice as they look to bolster their options in midfield, with IIkay Gundogan having left the club to join Barcelona this summer.
The Citizens are edging closer to signing Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea
Pep Guardiola’s City are also on the verge of signing Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea in a deal worth £25 million.
Declan Rice, the West Ham United academy graduate was impressive for the Hammers last term, after he was made the captain of the club following the retirement of Mark Noble in 2022.
Since he made his first team debut in the 2016/17 season, Rice has blossomed beyond measure and he has cemented his spot in the starting 11 of David Moyes.
The England International featured in 50 out of the 61 matches West Ham United played last term.
He assisted the club to a 14th place finish on the Premier League table for the 2022/23 season despite the club’s wishy-washy performances last season.
Declan Rice also helped the club to Europa Conference League triumph last term, as West Ham United defeated Fiorentina 2-1 in Prague.
Rice has his name in the history books of West Ham United
The 24-year-old became the third West Ham United captain to win a trophy for the club, following the path of Bobby Moore, who lifted the Cup Winners Cup in 1965.
In addition to Bobby Moore, Billy Bonds also guided the club to the FA Cup title in 1975 and 1980.
Rice has made 245 appearances for the London side, scoring 15 goals and providing 13 assists for West Ham United.
The Englishman has also made 41 appearances for the Three Lions of England since his debut in 2019.
The next few days promises to be entertaining for neutrals in the transfer market as there is the possibility of a bidding war emerging between Manchester City and Arsenal.
There is also the eventuality of West Ham United’s valuation of their captain being met by either of the two clubs.
