Derby County are in administration and the club got relegated to League One after getting 21 points deducted from them last season. The club initially received a 12-point deduction because of administration issues which were followed by another 9 points deduction for breaking EFL financial regulations.

Derby are currently searching for new ownership. Amid that, Wayne Rooney who has been the manager of the club through the thick and thin decided to dump the club on Friday, June 24, 2022.

Speaking on why he took the decision, Wayne Rooney said: “Throughout the summer I have been closely following developments regarding the ownership of Derby County. Today I met with the administrators to inform them of my decision that it was time for me to leave the club.

“In fairness to them, they tried tremendously hard to change my decision but my mind was made up. My time at the club has been a rollercoaster of emotions, both highs, and lows, but I have to say that I have enjoyed the challenge.”

He continued: “Personally, I feel the club now needs to be led by someone with fresh energy and not affected by the events that have happened over the last eighteen months. I will remember my time at Derby with great pride and affection and would like to thank all my staff, players and of course the fans for their incredible support.

“I will never forget you and hope to see you all again in the near future and in happier times.

“Finally, I am aware that the club still has interested parties who wish to take over the running of the club. To them I say this, Derby County is a great club with a great history and great fans. I wish you all the best and much success for the future.”

Wayne Rooney joined Derby County on a free transfer from Everton in 2020 and he later became a caretaker coach. The 36-year-old was promoted to the head coach position the next year and was in charge for 84 games.

Had it not been for the 21-point deduction, the team would have finished last season with 55 points in 18th position which would have been enough to keep them in the Championship.

With the team wallowing in administration and the third tier of English football, Rooney had to take the hard decision to save his reputation as a coach.
