He spent the remaining part of the 2019-2020 season playing for the Championship club and couldn’t help them to gain promotion to the Premier League.

Before the season ended, Rooney managed to score only 5 goals and provided 3 assists in 20 appearances in all competitions which were only enough to keep Derby in the second tier of English club football.

He continued to play for the Championship side in the 2020-2021 season and made a total of 10 appearances and scored just a goal before he was appointed as one of the four-man interim managers of Derby County when the club sacked coach Phillip Cocu.

As stated earlier, Wayne Rooney retired from professional football on 15 January 2021 while at Derby County. He was 35-year-old when he announced his retirement from football as a player.

At that point, the former England international has been made a player-manager of Derby County after the club sacked coach Phillip Cocu due to a poor run of games. Recall that Rooney left Major League Soccer club, DC United in the summer of 2020 to join Derby County after spending two years in the United States.

He joined the Championship side as a player and has made about 11 appearances in all competitions before he replaced Cocu as part of a four-man interim coaching crew.

On 26 November 2020, Derby County announced that Wayne Rooney has taken over as the sole manager of the club. After the announcement, Rooney removed himself from the club’s squad.

A few weeks later, the club made the English tactician the club’s permanent coach which prompted him to retire from playing professional football.

Before now, he has retired from international football after representing the England national football team between 2003 and 2018. To date, he remains the youngest player to score in a European Championship after recording 4 goals in the 2004 edition of the competition.

These stats were good enough for the board of the club, hence, Wayne Rooney was made the permanent coach of the club before their league match against Bournemouth which Derby won 1-0 on Tuesday, January 19.
