On 26 November 2020, Derby County announced that Wayne Rooney has taken over as the sole manager of the club. After the announcement, Rooney removed himself from the club’s squad.

Before now, he has retired from international football after representing the England national football team between 2003 and 2018. To date, he remains the youngest player to score in a European Championship after recording 4 goals in the 2004 edition of the competition.
He retired from the national team with 53 goals in 120 appearances which made him England’s all-time highest goalscorer and second-most-capped player, behind Peter Shilton.
