Luis Diaz recently faced a distressing situation when his parents were taken hostage in their native country of Colombia.
Fortunately, his mother has been successfully rescued, though his father remains missing.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced on Saturday, October 28, that the mother of the 26-year-old prominent Columbian footballer had been liberated following her abduction in northern Colombia.
However, authorities are still tirelessly searching for his father, hoping for a positive outcome.
How Luis Diaz’s parents were kidnapped
According to local sources, the tragic incident occurred in the town of Barrancas, located in La Guajira, where Diaz spent his childhood.
It is reported that the footballer’s parents were ambushed by unidentified individuals while traveling in their respective vehicles.
Shockingly, the assailants hijacked the van carrying Diaz’s parents before fleeing the scene, leaving a trail of uncertainty behind them.
Semana reported that Colonel Geovanniancho, the national of Gaula Police, is to go to the northern region to lead the search and rescue efforts.
“We already have the mother, she is in good health, scared, but she is fine. They took the father away on a motorcycle, they took him out of the car and took him along the trails there,” a source told SEMANA.
However, conflicting reports suggest that Diaz’s parents may have been abducted while attending a football match, which could complicate the investigation.
The military and police services are collaborating in the area to determine the location of the victims.
In response, Colombia’s Attorney General’s Office released a prompt statement on X platform (previously known as Twitter).
After learning about the kidnapping of Colombian player Luis Díaz’s parents in the Barrancas sector of La Guajira, the Fiscalía General of the Nation promptly initiated a specialized team comprising prosecutors, officials from the Technical Investigation Corps (CTI), and investigators from the Gaula Police and Military.
Their urgent objective is to locate the kidnapped individuals, investigate the incident thoroughly, and identify those responsible.
According to Blu Radio Colombia, who released a video showing the aftermath of the kidnapping in the family’s neighborhood, Diaz’s mother has been successfully rescued.
However, his father remains in captivity, presumably held by armed men.
It is worth noting that Diaz recently played for Liverpool during their Merseyside derby in the Premier League last weekend.
Having joined his international team, Colombian winger Díaz participated in the CONMEBOL qualifiers against Ecuador and Uruguay.
Díaz, who has represented Colombia 43 times, has not provided any comments regarding the incident.
Liverpool secured the signing of Díaz from Porto in a multimillion-dollar agreement in January 2022.
Throughout his career with the Premier League giants, Díaz has netted 14 goals in 58 matches.
What’s next for Diaz and Liverpool?
Diaz will be seen in Premier League action for Liverpool at Anfield today, Sunday, October 29.
Liverpool’s forthcoming match will take place against Nottingham Forest with kickoff set at 3pm.
