Former Chelsea star Diego Costa was sent off in a shocking display of aggression while playing for Gremio’s B side in a Copa FGF cup match against Juventude B on Wednesday.
In a bid to help Diego Costa regain his form, Brazilian club Gremio featured the former Atletico Madrid star in a seemingly low key U-20 junior match.
However, instead of finding his form, the 35-year-old Costa’s appearance ended in degrading chaos, marked by a fiery confrontation that left a lasting impression – and a red card.
The incident, which has gone viral on social media, showcases Costa’s notorious temper, reminiscent of his tumultuous spells in every League he’s appeared including the Premier League.
How The Incident Unfolded
During the 53rd minute of the match, Costa was tripped by an opposing player, prompting an immediate and fiery reaction.
The former Chelsea controversial Costa was upset over a reckless late challenge that occurred after he had already passed the ball, prompting him to quickly chase after the offender.
He confronted the player, putting his arm around him before walking him backwards and appearing to push him in the throat.
The situation quickly escalated, with both teams and the referee intervening to separate the players.
Red Cards and Consequences
Both Costa and the Juventude player were given their marching orders, leaving their teams to finish the match with 10 men each.
Meanwhile, Gremio ultimately lost the fourth-round clash, which featured a mix of senior squad members and U20 players.
Fan Reaction and Diego Costa Future
While some fans have praised Costa’s passion and tenacity, others have criticized his behavior as unacceptable.
One fan hilariously said: “Bro didn’t last 60 minute ProperChels”.
A second fan made jest of the 35-year-old senior striker, saying: “but it’s a competition for children!”
Third one said: “Never change Diego”
Another fan expressed his disappointment: “Fighting a kid?”
Costa joined Gremio earlier this year, where he has scored seven goals in 15 first team games in all competitions.
However, with his contract running until the end of December, it remains to be seen whether he will be rewarded with a new deal.
Diego Costa Troubled Past
Costa’s history of controversy is well-documented, with numerous incidents during his time in Spain and England.
The unruly footballer’s tumultuous career in LaLiga and the Premier League was plagued by bans, conflicts, and injuries.
The striker faced a series of suspensions, with the most notable being an eight-game ban in 2019 for verbally abusing a referee after being sent off while playing for Atletico against Barcelona.
This incident added to his total of over forty matches suspension throughout his career, with earlier suspensions in 2015 during his time at Chelsea following his violent conduct against Liverpool and Arsenal.
Meanwhile, despite his controversial past, Costa continued to display his aggressive nature upon returning to Brazil to play for Botafogo in August 2023.
Most recently, he made headlines for his heated altercation during a match for his current club Gremio’s U-20 team against Juventude at age 35!
This latest outburst has sparked debate about his suitability for the sport, with some calling for stricter punishment.
