Luton Town have completed the signing of former Everton forward Andros Townsend on a free transfer.

Townsend has put pen to paper on a short-term deal with the Hatters, which runs until January 2024.

Andros Townsend became a free agent on July 1, 2023, following the expiration of his contract with Everton.

The former Tottenham Hotspur winger nearly signed for Burnley in the 2023 summer transfer window, before they pulled the plug on the deal.

The Clarets opted not to sign Townsend as they didn’t want his arrival to be inimical to the development of younger players.

Luton Town statement on the signing of Andros Townsend

Confirming the signing of Andros Townsend, Luton Town put out a statement on their website which reads:

“Manager Rob Edwards has completed the signing of England international winger Andros Townsend on a short-term contract until January.”

The Englishman made 27 appearances for previous club Everton, scoring 7 goals and providing 4 assists across all competitions.

Townsend made his mark at Crystal Palace, where he made 185 appearances for the club, scoring 16 goals and providing 28 assists in all competitions.

The 32-year-old has also had stints at English clubs like; Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United, and Birmingham City, amongst others.

Speaking on his arrival to Kenilworth Road, Andros Townsend said that he has seen the areas where he can provide his quota to the club, and the manager has also seen where he can also help the team.

He said: “I’ve seen where I can help this team and on the flipside the manager has seen where I can help – whether that’s on the pitch, in the dressing room or on the training field – with my enthusiasm and experience.”

Honor to play for Luton Town – Townsend says

Townsend also added that it is a massive honor for him to play in the Premier League for Luton Town.

The Englishman said: “I never thought I’d pull on the Luton shirt, so it’s a huge honor to play again in the Premier League for this club, and hopefully help this club get as many points as we can and see where it takes us.”

The 32-year-old has 264 Premier League appearances under his belt, and he has also represented England at senior level.

Andros Townsend played for the Three Lions between 2013 and 2016, making 16 appearances and scoring 3 goals in the process.

Luton Town sit 17th on the English Premier League table with 4 points, and they will be hoping that Townsend delivers quality for the club.

The Hatters would be banking on the Englishman’s Premier League experience as they look to record positive results in subsequent matches.

Rob Edwards’ side have picked up only one win in 8 league matches, and that type of form doesn’t guarantee safety in the English top-flight football league.
