Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has been named the Best Young Player of the 2021-22 Season in Serie A, completing the list of MVPs.
The award is for players who are under 23, and Osimhen sneaks in there, having turned 23 in late December 2021.
The Nigeria international faced stiff competition from the likes of Dusan Vlahovic at both Fiorentina and Juventus but came out on top thanks to his 14 goals and five assists in just 26 Serie A appearances this season.
On November 24, Osimhen fractured his eye socket during Napoli’s 3-2 loss to Inter Milan. That was one of several facial fractures he sustained after colliding with Milan Skriniar at the San Siro. Following the horrific injury, he had 18 metal screws and six plaques inserted to stabilize his facial features.

Osimhen was out for two months due to a facial injury but managed 14 league goals in 26 games for Napoli, who are set to finish the season under review in 3rd spot. Four out of his 18 goals in 31 games in all competitions were scored in Napoli’s Europa League campaign.
The Nigerian’s future has been a subject of rife speculation for months. According to reports, he is on his way out of the Italian club, which he joined in 2020 for a club and African record fee of €81.3 million.
He has been linked to several sides, including Arsenal, Manchester United, and lately, Newcastle United.
Despite missing much of the campaign due to this injury, Osimhen was still named Best Young Player in Serie A for the 2021-22 season. This is his second year at Napoli after joining LOSC in September 2020.
With Osimhen, this completes the five MVPs of Serie A with goalkeeper Mike Maignan (Milan), defender Gleison Bremer (Torino), and midfielder Marcelo Brozovic (Inter) and striker Ciro Immobile (Lazio).
His performance for the Parthenopeans this season has been a stark contrast to his previous one when reoccurring injuries hindered his justification of the club’s €70 million transfer fee.
Osimhen began his senior career with VfL Wolfsburg in 2017 after impressing at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile. He joined Lille in 2019. After just one season, he moved to Naples in 2020. Osimhen was born in Lagos to parents from Edo State.
On 31 July 2020, Serie A club Napoli announced the signing of Osimhen, for a club-record fee of €70 million potentially rising to €80 million with add-ons, making him the most expensive African transfer to date.
