Elumelu was born on March 22, 1963 in Plateau State in the Northern part of Nigeria to Dominic and Suzanne Elumelu from Delta State, Nigeria. He attended Ambrose Alli University and bagged a Second Class Lower Honours in Economics before going for his Master’s degree in the same discipline in University of Lagos.

Tony Elumelu first started his career as National Youth Corp Member working with United Bank For Africa (UBA), a Pan-African bank with branches in European countries.
In 1997, he led a takeover of Crystal Bank (later renamed Standard Trust Bank). After the takeover, Elumelu, led one of the biggest mergers in the Nigerian banking industry, merging Standard Trust Bank with UBA in 2005
He was the Group Managing Director of the UBA after the merger, leading the bank from a single banking group to an international bank with branches in 20 African countries, and in Europe.
Elumelu stepped down as the Chief Executive of UBA in 2010 and started his Heirs Holding, a family-owned investment company with interests in oil and gas, healthcare, hospitality, and financial services.
In 2021, Elumelu acquired Transcorp PLC, a diversified transnational corporation with investments in oil and gas, agriculture, and hospitality sector.

Amid speculations linking him to Napoli exit this summer, Victor Osimhen told Soccernet he will stay at Napoli next season.
