A former presidential aspirant of FC Barcelona, Victor Font wants the club to start thinking of how they can bring Lionel Messi back to the club.
Recall that one of Victor Font’s agenda during the club’s last presidential campaign was that he would ensure that Messi remains at FC Barcelona. Unfortunately for him, he lost the election to the incumbent, Joan Laporta.
When Laporta was made the president of the club, he tried to renew Lionel Messi’s contract but negotiations dragged until the contract expired on June 30, 2021.
Even as that, Barca continued to push to make Messi stay but the financial complications at the club forced them to allow the 34-year-old Argentine football icon to go.
Less than 48 hours after FC Barcelona confirmed that they could not offer the record 6 times Ballon d’Or winner a new contract, he joined Paris Saint Germain. He signed a two-year deal with the French side. The contract is expected to expire on June 30, 2023.
In reaction to how the whole event unfolded, Victor Font believes that Messi who won at least 35 major titles with Barca in 17 years deserved better treatment from Barca.
“His departure deserved to be through the front door,” Victor Font told RAC-1.
“From that moment on, the club should be thinking about how Messi could return to Barcelona in 2023.”
Earlier, Futballnews has reported that Lionel Messi plans to return to Barcelona after he retires from football. He said he would make himself available to help the club in the future.

Victor Font comments on the appointment of Xavi
The departure of Lionel Messi from FC Barcelona ahead of the 2021-2022 season made things more difficult for coach Ronald Koeman.
The Dutch coach struggled to win games in both the UEFA Champions League campaign and the Spanish La Liga this season. His inconsistency forced Barcelona to ask him to leave the club.
After his sack, the Spanish club decided to appoint Xavi, one of the club’s best midfielders ever. Like Messi, Xavi is a product of the club’s youth system who played the best of his football career at the club before he moved to Qatar in 2015 to play for Al Sadd.
He played for the Qatari club until 2019 when the club decided to make him their coach. Despite lacking professional coaching experience, he helped the club to win all the available club titles in Qatar within three years.
Based on his performance in Qatar, Barca’s board believes that Xavi is the right person to return the club to winning ways. Victor Font also believes that the Spanish tactician can take the club to the next level.
“He’s an asset to the club”, Font said. ” I celebrate as much as anyone that the people running the club now coincide with what we thought. It is a shame to have lost these months, but we have to congratulate everyone for the fact Xavi is finally leading the sporting project.
“We will see changes in the first game. I have spoken with him about football and it is a delight to listen to him. That’s only happened to me with him and with Guardiola. It will be a more recognizable football. Wingers staying wide, pressing high, winning the ball back as quickly as possible. There won’t be miracles, but we will soon see the football we identify with.”
