UEFA has been permitted to penalize Super League Clubs after a Spanish court eliminated sanctions protections for the clubs that formed a breakaway last year.

Following the collapse of the initiative in April 2021, a different judge concluded that football’s governing bodies could not impose punitive sanctions on the 12 clubs involved since doing so would prevent the ESL from being formed in the future, which would be illegal under competition regulations.

The decision came after UEFA said that the club might be barred from competing in the Champions League and other sanctioned events.

UEFA negotiated a deal with the nine teams that backtracked in which they agreed to donate to grassroots football as an apology for their acts, while Juventus, Real Madrid, and Barcelona continue to advocate for the development of the new league and have defied all UEFA threats.

A Spanish commercial court has now overruled the decision to block sanctions, as numerous outlets reported on Thursday.

“It has not been established that the fear of fines against the three clubs would render the project impossible to carry out,” stated judge Sofa Gil in her decision.

When UEFA learned of the decision, they issued their own statement.

“The Madrid court’s order lifting the precautionary measures in their entirety was received by UEFA today. This judgment has been welcomed by UEFA, which is now assessing the ramifications. For the time being, UEFA will not make any further statements “it was written.

At this time, it appears that UEFA will not take action against the 12 clubs involved in the Super League plans. For the time being, the parties have mostly reconciled, with changes to the Champions League — which will take effect in the 2024/25 season – expected to subdue any opposition.
