UEFA Champions League round of 16 added some new teams while Europa League welcomed some new teams that failed to qualify for the UCL knockout rounds.
Twelve teams have now qualified for the 2022–23 Champions League knockout rounds with one matchday remaining in the group stage.
After matchday five of the group stage, Inter Milan, Liverpool, and Porto have all advanced to the Champions League last 16, making it a total of 12 qualified teams.
Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League
Group A
After thrashing Rangers 7-1 in their previous Champions League match, Liverpool‘s 3-0 victory over Ajax sealed their progress to the round of 16.
Harvey Elliot, Darwin Nez, and Mohamed Salah all scored goals for the Reds, who still have a chance to win the group if they defeat Napoli convincingly on matchday six.
If they escape a four-goal loss at Anfield, the Italians, who defeated Rangers 3-0 on Wednesday, will finish first in Group A.
Group B
Club Brugge, who on matchday four clinched their qualification from Group B, fell to Porto 4-0 at home. This result, along with a last-second Atlético Madrid penalty miss, helped the Portuguese advance to the round of 16.
Atlético needed to defeat Bayer Leverkusen in order to maintain their hopes of qualifying after Porto defeated Brugge, but Yannick Carrasco missed a late penalty kick for Los Rojiblancos, resulting in a 2-2 draw in Spain.
Atleti must now defeat Porto on matchday six to ensure a third-place finish ahead of Leverkusen as their only hope for European football this season is Europa League.
Group C
Inter’s 4-0 victory over Viktoria Plzen in one of the day’s first Champions League games ensured the Nerazzurri’s qualification for the round of 16, while also ensuring Barcelona’s second consecutive group-stage loss.
Barça will undoubtedly finish third and fall into the Europa League after losing to Bayern Munich at home by a score of 3-0.
Bayern was declared the group C winner after their convincing victory at Camp Nou over the league champions.
Group D
In Group D, where only two points separate first and fourth, nothing has been settled.
Leaders On Wednesday, Eintracht Frankfurt defeated Marseille 2-1 to overtake the Frenchmen and move into third place, while Tottenham Hotspur drew 1-1 with Sporting CP to remain in second place.
If Spurs draw away against Marseille in the final round of group play, they will automatically qualify, and Sporting will also advance with a point against Frankfurt in Portugal. To qualify, Frankfurt need the three maximum points.
If Tottenham loses in France, Sporting and Frankfurt would all tie with Spurs if Sporting and Frankfurt draw in Lisbon. If these were to occur, Marseille would come from last place to win the group, while Sporting would advance in second place since they have the best record in games involving the trio.
