Despite a disappointing 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday, September 15, Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou remains confident in his ability to win trophy this season.

The Australian boss, who is in his second season at the helm, has a proven track record of success in his second year at clubs, and he’s assured fans that this season will be no exception.

Postecoglou’s comments came after a frustrating loss to Arsenal, which saw Gabriel score the only goal with a powerful header from a corner.

Despite dominating the match, Spurs were unable to capitalize on their chances, leaving them with just one win from their first four Premier League games.

However, Postecoglou is undeterred, and he’s reiterated his belief that Tottenham can still win silverware this season.

The 59-year-old Postecoglou was asked if Tottenham could still challenge for silverware this season and he told Sky Sports:“Yes, absolutely. If I can answer the question or are you going to keep asking?”

While Postecoglou is yet to win a Premier League match against Arsenal in his three attempts, he remains optimistic about his team’s chances this season.

He led Tottenham to fifth place in his first season, and now he’s determined to end the club’s 16-year wait for a trophy.

He added: “I will correct myself. I don’t usually win things, I always win things in my second year… nothing’s changed. I just sort of said it now, I don’t say things unless I believe them.”

Postecoglou’s confidence stems from his experience in his second season at previous clubs, where he’s consistently delivered success.

He claimed Australian titles with South Melbourne and Brisbane Roar, and the Japanese league with Yokohama F Marinos, all in his second season or second full season as the manager.

Additionally, Postecoglou secured the Asian Cup two years after taking charge of the Australia national team, as well as the Scottish championship in both seasons with Celtic.

However, the 59-year-old did not complete two seasons in charge of Panachaiki, Whittlesea Zebras, or Melbourne Victory, failing to win any trophies with these smaller clubs before departing Melbourne Victory after 18 months to take on the Australian job.

Postecoglou football and managerial journey

Postecoglou primarily served as a defender for South Melbourne Hellas and earned four caps for the Australia national team in the late 1980s. Transitioning to coaching, he achieved success with South Melbourne Hellas before moving on to lead the national under-17 and under-20 teams.

Postecoglou went on to manage Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory in the A-League, securing the Premiership and Championship titles with Brisbane Roar in 2011 and 2011-2012.

His tenure as the men’s senior national team manager from 2013 to 2017 saw him guide Australia to victory in the AFC Asian Cup in 2015 and a berth in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Leading Yokohama F. Marinos to the J1 League title in 2019, he later enjoyed success with Celtic, winning five trophies including two league titles in just two seasons.

In 2023, Postecoglou took on the role of head coach at Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur.
