Tottenham Hotspur have allegedly started negotiating with Marcus Rashford and his advisors about a summer transfer to north London – but Manchester United’s exorbitant price tag could make a deal this summer impossible.
The 24-year-old striker has just finished what has been a forgettable season. He only scored five goals and added two assists as he tried to reclaim the form that had made him famous. He went in and out of the United team as he tried to persuade Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and subsequently Ralf Rangnick that he deserved a starting spot.
United struggled to a sixth-place finish as a result of his abysmal form, which he shared with many of his colleagues. Rashford’s spot in the England team was also jeopardized.
But there were rumors closer to home that Rashford was concerned about his long-term future at Old Trafford. To that goal, he allegedly spoke with Rangnick to determine whether he was still wanted.
If the rumors were anything to go by, Rashford and his representatives appear to have taken matters into their own hands. Rashford’s advisers have talked with Tottenham, according to Italian super-agent Roberto De Fanti, whose clients include Tottenham defender Japhet Tanganga.
A move this summer is improbable for the player, who has made it clear that he wants to stay at United. And, with his contract set to expire in 2023 (with an option to extend it to 2024), United is said to have put a large asking amount on his head.
A hefty price tag for Tottenham Hotspur
According to De Fanti, Manchester United is looking for between £70 million and £80 million for the attacker. That’s a lot more money than Tottenham are ready to spend, although things might change in the summer of 2023.
“I can also confirm that there have been some discussions very recently between the player’s camp and Tottenham Hotspur,” De Fanti told Caught Offside. “The London club feel negotiating a deal for Rashford is virtually impossible though. So that transfer no longer seems an option.”
De Fanti went on to say that despite Rashford’s recent struggles, there is still a lot of interest in him. As a result, teams in Italy and Spain are said to be keeping eyes on his condition in the event of a future transfer.
However, United’s decision to place such a high price tag on him is viewed as a clear indication that he is still very much a part of their plans.
Marcus Rashford is in for a big season
Marcus Rashford’s future hinges on the next four or five months. A new management — one who believes in him – may be able to help him recover his greatest form. And putting him back on track will undoubtedly be one of Ten Hag’s top goals in the future.
The United boss is unlikely to spend money on numerous players, preferring instead to work with – and improve – the ones he already has. However, the player’s situation is not hopeless. With a strong start to the season, United supporters may see the Rashford they know and love return.
And as a result, the player may be able to restore his spot in the World Cup team ahead of Qatar 2020. And, with his contract status deteriorating, a return to form may win him a contract extension.
If he continues to play as he did in 2021/22, a summer exit for the 93-goal striker would become more plausible.
Bayern Munich is also interested, with a report last month outlining Rashford’s desperate measures to impress his new management.
