Toni Kroos of Real Madrid has savagely tagged Celta Vigo’s wunderkid Gabri Veiga’s move to Saudi Pro League as ’embarrassing’.
Gabri Veiga, 21, was the subject of big-name interest this summer, with Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea understood to have closely monitored him.
However, reports claim that Serie A Champions Napoli had won the race, and also fresh reports claims that the deal was on the brink of collapsing.
And now Futballnews understands that the reason why the deal appeared to be off is that Veiga opted for Saudi side Al-Ahli.
Transfer news guru Fabrizio Romano revealed that the playmaker was the club’s secretive top target in this window and the switch is rapidly approaching completion.
And now he has taken exception to Veiga’s shock decision to quit LaLiga for the kingdom’s riches and aimed a dig at him on social media.
Al-Ahli, based in Jeddah, have been one of the most active Saudi clubs in the market, after they landed Roberto Firmino, Edouard Mendy, Allan Saint-Maximin and Franck Kessie.
A lot of players have been convinced to move over from Europe to the Saudi league this summer, with a massive recruitment drive that is backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
Gabri Veiga is one of the continent’s brightest talents after a superb season and also made Spain’s U21s.
Veiga bagged 11 goals in 36 LaLiga appearances last season and was able to provide four assists.
This season, he started from the bench for Celta’s first match but was an unused substitute for the draw with Real Sociedad last weekend.
Why Toni Kroos found Veiga’s decision to move to the Saudi Pro League embarrassing is because Manchester United and Newcastle were also linked with Veiga with Celta president Carlos Mourino admitting that he will not be able to stop the star from leaving.
Speaking about Veiga, Mourino said: “We don’t want to sell Gabri Veiga, but they are going to buy him from us. And we can’t do anything there.”
“We know some of his offers and it is impossible to reach them.”
“There are several teams behind Gabri. Of the top 10 in the Premier League, four have asked about him.”
The aforementioned players are in their 30s, unlike the promising Veiga who turned 21 just a matter of months ago.
