Thomas Tuchel is the new manager of Chelsea football club. The West London club appointed the German tactician today, January 26, 2021, less than two days after sacking coach Frank Lampard.

The 47-year-old German tactician who was sacked by Paris Saint Germain after spending two-and-a-half seasons with the French club has been jobless since December 2020. Few days before Chelsea sacked Lampard, he was touted to be the replacement of the 42-year-old English tactician.

Thomas Tuchel is regarded as one of the most successful managers Paris Saint Germain ever had because he helped the club to win two successive French Ligue 1 titles and led the club to the final of the UEFA Champions League last season.

Before he became the coach of the French club in 2018, PSG has never gone as far as playing in the Champions League final. Hence, the German tactician became the first coach to take the club that far in the competition.

Thomas Tuchel who has coached Mainz 05, Borussia Dortmund, and PSG, is the first coach from Germany to be appointed as the manager of Chelsea. He is the 15th managerial appointment the owner of the club, Roman Abramovich, has made since he took over the ownership of the club in 2003.

The German tactician would not be a total stranger at Stamford Bridge because he has previously worked with some of Chelsea‘s stars like Christian Pulisic at Borussia Dortmund, and Thiago Silva at PSG.

Chelsea gave Thomas Tuchel an 18-month contract which is the exact number of months Frank Lampard spent as the head coach of Chelsea before he was sacked on Monday, January 25, 2021.

According to a statement on the official website of Chelsea, Tuchel’s 18-month contract with the London club has the possibility of being extended.

After his appointment, Tuchel said: “I would like to thank Chelsea FC for their confidence in me and my staff.

“We all have the greatest respect for Frank Lampard’s work and the legacy he created at Chelsea. At the same time, I cannot wait to meet my new team and compete in the most exciting league in football. I am grateful to now be part of the Chelsea family – it feels amazing!”

While the director of the club, Marina Granovskaia said: “It is never easy to change Head Coach in the middle of the season but we are very happy to secure one of Europe’s best coaches in Thomas Tuchel. There is still much to play for and much to achieve, this season and beyond. We welcome Thomas to the Club.”

Thomas Tuchel has already resumed his role as the new manager of Chelsea. He was at the club’s training ground this evening and he would be in charge of the club when Chelsea face Wolves on Wednesday, January 27.
