The manager of Chelsea football club, Thomas Tuchel has acknowledged that the performance of his team against Juventus was strange to him.
The German technician stressed that his team had two good training sessions before the UEFA Champions League group stage game but his players’ performance at the Juventus stadium was below expectation.
Recall that Chelsea traveled to Turin, Italy, to take on Juventus in a Champions League Group H game on Wednesday, September 29, 2021. Ahead of the game, the two clubs were joint top of their group.
Fortunately for Juventus, the host beat their visitors with a 46th-minute goal from Federico Chiesa’s second-half strike.
Despite Chelsea recording 74 percent of the ball possession throughout the game, they could not score a goal. They recorded 16 shots and only one of the shots was on target.
Hence, Juventus that recorded just 6 shots, won the game with their only shot on target. The 1-0 win solidified their top spot ranking with 6 points in two games. While Chelsea made do with the second spot with three points in two games.
As it stands, Thomas Tuchel and his boys need to beat Malmo on October 20, 2021, to maintain their second spot which Zenith could take over if they manage to beat Juventus on the said date.
After the defeat in Turin, Thomas Tuchel whose team suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City three days before the Champions League group stage game, noted that he didn’t know why Chelsea performed so poorly against Juventus.
Thomas Tuchel said: “I think we started not sharp enough. We struggled to create our own rhythm and intensity because they were so deep and passive. We were lacking runs. We were so good in training yesterday and not good enough, not free enough today. I don’t know why.
“I felt we were a bit slow and tired, mentally slow, decision-making. That’s why it’s a strange one to analyze. We had a day off and two very good training sessions yesterday. We were absolutely sharp, looked very fresh and very hungry, and ready for a bounce back.
“It’s very difficult to put on a high rhythm against a team who defends so deep. If we defended deep against City it was difficult for them to create chances. It was the same for us here. But the difference was we gave two big chances and gave the belief back into the stadium.”
While analyzing Chelsea’s performance against Juventus in comparison with his team’s performance against City last weekend, Tuchel said: “Manchester City scored from a set-piece with a deflected shot against us. Sometimes you need this. If a team defends deep, it’s hard to find your own rhythm.
“We were lacking runners. Once we started to do other things, we made mistakes and that cost us a bit of belief. A shooting problem. If we don’t shoot, they cannot be on target. If you play against a deep block like today, it’s hard to take shots.
“We found the spaces, it wasn’t easy. We had a lot of shots, but I think there are some chances late in the game where it wouldn’t have been so hard to find the target.”
