The manager of Chelsea football club, Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that the club’s forward Timo Werner developed a ‘dead leg’ during the club’s Premier League match against Sheffield United.

The 24-year-old German forward was substituted 15 minutes to the end of the Premier League match which ended 2-1 in favor of Chelsea on Sunday, February 7, 2021. When he got to the bench, it was spotted that a bandage was tied to his leg.

Hence, it was speculated that the German international has sustained an injury that could keep him out of the team for a couple of games.

However, during the post-match press conference, Tuchel said it was not a serious injury but a dead leg (an injury caused by a numbing blow with the knee to a person’s upper leg).

“He will be OK,” Tuchel confirmed. “It’s a dead leg, it’s no serious. I’m sure if you played five-a-side with your friends you would know that it is very painful at the moment, but right now I don’t have any worries.”

Thomas Tuchel says Timo Werner would soon start scoring

Timo Werner has not scored for Chelsea in the last 14 Premier League games despite being used more frequently than other strikers in the team.

Even though he has not been able to score as many goals as expected, the 24-year-old center-forward has been very useful in the present Chelsea’s set-up.

For instance, in Sunday’s game against Sheffield United, Timo Werner gave a man-of-the-match performance. The former RB Leipzig talisman provided the assist that led to Chelsea’s first goal. He was also fouled in Sheffield’s box which led to a penalty. Hence, he had a hand in the two goals Chelsea scored against Sheffield.

Based on his performance on Sunday, Chelsea’s coach believes that if the German striker can maintain such a form, he would soon start scoring as many goals as expected.

“It was a brilliant run to assist the first goal, and it was good decision-making with the second on to go around the goalkeeper, so it was a foul,” Tuchel said.

“He got us the decisive penalty again like he did at Tottenham. I could feel that situation at Tottenham boosted his confidence, and he has been stronger and stronger every day.

“He is freer and freer, today I could really feel him on the pitch, he was absolutely in the game, physically and mentally, and he was decisive.

“This is the most important thing because if he can continue like this the goals will come, I am sure.”

Chelsea are now 5th on the league table

Chelsea are steadily rising back to a Champions League spot which the club’s coach Thomas Tuchel said is the target of the club. He took over the reign of the club when Chelsea were miles away from the top four but three successive victories have brought them closer to a Champions League spot.

After the 2-1 win over Sheffield United, Chelsea has been able to climb to the 5th spot on the league table, one point away from 4th placed Liverpool. The club now has 39 points in 23 league games, 11 points from first-placed Manchester City.

“It’s absolutely clear that we are responsible for the situation where we are close to where we want to be,” Tuchel noted.

“We want to try everything to reach the top four, we said that very clear when we started. The guys have put themselves in the situation where they are the ‘hunters’ for the teams in front of us and we are close.

“But that changes nothing because, like everybody else, we are under pressure to continue our run and build momentum.

“The challenge now is to improve for the next challenge, play in the FA Cup, and then the next league game. If we keep on going, the fixtures will take care of themselves.”
