Manchester United centre back Harry Maguire said Manchester United does not play to earn a Champions League spot but to win the Premier League title.

The club is regarded as one of the greatest clubs in the United Kingdom and also one of the greatest in European football but in recent times, especially in this season, the club has been having it so difficult.

Before the coronavirus interrupted the 2019-2020 football season, the club was fighting for a top-four finish, something which has suddenly become a luxury to the club.

But Harry Maguire wants critics to understand that Manchester United is still that big club that wants to win the Premier League every season.

Though the club is currently occupying the 5th position on the Premier League table with 45 points below Chelsea and Leicester which currently occupy the 4th and the 3rd spots with 48 and 50 points respectively, Maguire says the club’s target has always been to challenge for the title.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United is too far from daring such a dream this season as Liverpool is comfortably sitting at the zenith with 82 points with the same number of games as the Red Devils.

All the clubs now have at least 9 games for the season to come to a full circle. The best Manchester United can do with the 9 games is to fight for a top-four finish if the season finally resumes.

“I think you can see from the start of the season we look a lot more like a team, we can probably see where we want to go, where we want to head”, Maguire told Gary Neville on Sky Sports.

“I knew when I first came to Manchester United that Ole said to me loads and loads it’s a building process but we’ll be where we want to be. I can see where we’re heading and the style he wants to implement on the team.

“Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of aspects we need to improve to get to the top of where we want to be. We don’t want to be challenging for this Champions League spot, we want to be challenging for titles.

“We know there’s still a lot of improvement to get there, but we’re on the right track and I’m sure eventually we will get there.”

Harry Maguire has not enjoyed any glory since he joined Manchester United in 2019 except in January 2020 when he was named the captain of the club less than 6 months after joining the club from Leicester City.

Besides that, the England International holds a world record as the first defender in the world to be bought for £80 million. But Manchester United fans are yet to see much from the 27-year-old footballer.
