Thiago Alcantara Retires From Professional Football After He Was Released By Liverpool

Former Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara has decided to retire from professional football because of his consistent injuries over the years. 

The 33-year-old midfielder left Liverpool after his four-year contract end on June 30, 2024. 

Liverpool failed to renew his contract after the Spanish midfielder made just an appearance for the club last season.

Alcantara has a career to remember after playing for European giants like Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Liverpool. 

He started his career with the Barcelona side, where he won four La Liga titles, the Champions League, and the Copa del Rey.

After a successful tenure at Barcelona, he proceeded to join Bayern Munich in 2013. He won seven Bundesliga titles with the German giant.

In 2020, he won the Champions League with the Bayern Munich team that defeated Paris Saint-Germain in the final.

In 2020, he completed a move to Liverpool, even though Manchester United were heavily in the race to sign the midfielder. He won the FA Cup with Liverpool in the 2021–22 season.

In the 2009/10 season, the midfielder suffered from knee problems and was out for 59 days, missing 28 matches in all competitions.

He suffered from both shin and knee injury in the 2012–13 season, which made him out of football action for 122 days, missing 44 matches in all competitions.

He suffered the worst in the 2013–14 season, where he was out for a total of 267 days, missing a total of 75 games in a season for both clubs and county.

In the 2014–15 season, he tore his knee ligament and was out for 154 days, missing 37 matches in all competitions.

The injury came for him again in the 2015-16 season, where he was out for 31 days, missing six matches in all competitions.

Thiago Alcantara suffered from multiple injuries in the 2016–17 season. He was out of football action for 35 days.

The bad knee continued to worry the Spanish star in the 2017/18 season, which left him out of football action for 127 days, missing 20 matches in all competitions.

In the 2018–19 season, Thiago Alcantara suffered from three different injuries and was out for 34 days, missing nine matches in all competitions.

The Spanish midfielder didn’t participate in on-field action for 56 days, missing 10 games in all competitions for the 2019–20 season.

In the 2020–21 season, Alcantara was out for 95 days, missing 27 matches in all club competitions. For the 2021–22 season, he failed to play 23 matches because of injuries.

He was out for 365 days in the 2022–23 season without playing in a single game for Liverpool. The life-threatening injury continued in the 2023–24 season, where he was out for 117 days.

He had made 487 appearances, scoring 48 goals and creating 63 assists in all club competitions. He had received 65 yellow cards and one red card so far in his career.

Out of the 48 goals scored, 31 were for Bayern Munich, 11 for Barcelona, three for Liverpool, and three for Barcelona Atletic. 

He made his international debut for the Spain national team on August 10, 2011. He proceeded to score two goals in 46 appearances for the country.
