The Manchester City v Liverpool fixture is the last time the top two Premier League clubs will clash in the league this season. The league game which will kick off at 16:30 on Sunday, April 10, 2022, is expected to determine who will win this season’s league title.

On the said date, Liverpool who last won the Premier League title in 2019 are expected to visit the Etihad Stadium to play against the reigning champions of the league.

So far this season, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have recorded 22 wins, 6 draws, and two defeats in 30 league games. Their performance so far this season has earned them 72 points, which placed them on the second spot on the league table.

As for Manchester City, the Premier League champions have recorded 23 wins, 4 draws, and 3 defeats so far this season. Their performance has earned them 73 points in 30 games.

Interestingly, both Liverpool and Manchester City have 8 games to play before this season’s Premier League campaign ends in May. The Manchester City V Liverpool clash on Sunday is the 31st league game of the season for the two teams.

The fact that the gap between the two teams is just a point makes the Manchester City V Liverpool fixture a very special one. Most football enthusiasts believe that any of the two clubs that wins the fixture could win the league even though the two clubs will have seven league games to play after Sunday’s fixture.

Why Manchester City v Liverpool clash on Sunday, April 10 is the 2021-2022 Premier League title decider?

Jurgen Klopp of Liverpool and Pep Guardiola of Manchester City.

Manchester City and Liverpool have been challenging each other for the Premier League title since the 2017-2018 season. Recall that Manchester City won the Premier League title in 2018 at the expense of Liverpool, while in 2019, Liverpool won the league at the expense of Manchester City.

All things being equal, Manchester City could win the 2021-2022 Premier League title at the expense of Liverpool if they beat Liverpool on Sunday vis-a-vis. Though the journey to win the title started for all the 20 clubs in the league in 2021, the final part of the journey will commence on Sunday at 16:30 with Manchester City V Liverpool clash.

The two clubs are already gapping 3rd placed Chelsea with nothing less than 12 points which means that the battle for the league title this season is strictly between them. All things being equal, the battle might be relatively settled on Sunday.

This is why! If Manchester City beat Liverpool with any goal margin, City will remain top of the league table with four points above Liverpool. Once that happens, Liverpool would have to pray that Manchester City lose two games before they could have a chance to overtake the Pep Guardiola’s men.

If the game ends in a draw, it would still be an advantage for Manchester City because Pep Guardiola and his men will remain top of the league table with just a point above Liverpool.

On the other hand, if Liverpool continue with their current 10 games unbeaten run and defeat Manchester City on Sunday, Jurgen Klopp and his boys would be ahead of City with two points for the first time since September.

Based on the figures involved, it would be better for Liverpool to draw the game than to lose because losing the maximum three points would make it impossible for them to ever overtake City this season.
