Manchester United winger Tahith Chong has signed a new contract at Old Trafford until June 2022 with the option of another year. The Holland Under-21 international signed the two-year deal worth £30,000-a-week to end talk of leaving the club on a free transfer.

Chong has made 14 senior appearances for the club in all competitions after joining the United academy in 2016. The winger was part of the United squad that defeated Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 in last season’s Champions League comeback.

He has earned six caps for Holland’s Under-21s having played for the junior teams. The 20-year-old was strongly linked with a move Inter Milan in January after frozen out in the early part of the season. Chong was set to become a free agent this summer and now United have now tied him to a new deal.

Chong’s agent was spotted at Inter to discuss the possibility of the youngster joining the club. It was learned that Barcelona and Juventus were interested in Chong after learning of his perceived unsettled situation. The winger is set to stay at the club after United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer convinced him he had a future at Old Trafford.

Speaking about his new contract, Chong said: “I am delighted to sign this new contract and really grateful for the chance to prove myself here for many years to come.

“When I joined Manchester United as a youngster, it was a dream come true. It is an honor every time I pull on the shirt and represent this club.

“I am working hard every day to improve and I know this is the perfect environment to develop my game.

“The opportunity to learn from the manager, his coaching staff and the world-class players here is fantastic.”

Also speaking, Solskjaer commended Chong’s decision to sign a new deal after being frustrated at the club. He also expressed his happiness, calling Chong’s great potential as exciting for United.

The Norwegian said: “Tahith works extremely hard every day and he is constantly improving.

“His performances this season, whether for the first team or Under-23s, are a testament to his hard work, dedication and to his character.

“We are pleased with the progress he has made since he stepped up from the Academy and are looking forward to continuing to develop his talent.

“Tahith has great potential; given his age, ability, and work ethic, we can see that he has a bright future at Manchester United.”
