Bergwijn’s opportunities have been limited under Antonio Conte and was on the verge of joining Ajax in the January transfer window, but chose to stay at Tottenham after his heroics in the dramatic late win over Leicester.

Spurs struggled to play him more often even after he scored two goals deep into added time against Leicester. He spent most parts of the second half of the season struggling for game time.

While on international service, he told AD, “I’m at Oranje (the Dutch national team) now and then and we’ll have a look. It would be ideal if there was some sort of resolution shortly. All I have to do now is go play.

“But I want to leave Spurs now, that’s for sure.”

Tottenham has qualified for the Champions League for next season, but Bergwijn says that his decision this summer will not be influenced by the possibility of playing in Europe’s top club competition.

“That’s not even top priority,” he said. “Though it would be nice. What’s important is that I’m going to play.

“I wasn’t allowed to leave Spurs in the winter and then I didn’t have any problems. The last few months I was hardly looked after there. Now I want to play somewhere weekly.”

Bergwijn joined Tottenham for £27 million from PSV Eindhoven in January 2020 and has eight goals in 83 appearances for the north London club.

Due to his limited playing time at Tottenham, Steven Bergwijn was already linked with a summer move to Ajax.

Tottenham Hotspur and Ajax are close to agreeing on a deal for the Dutch international to join the Eredivisie winners.

This is according to Dutch journalist Mike Verweij, who believes the clubs are meeting in the middle on the cost.
