The head coach of Spain, Luis Enrique has defended his striker, Alvaro Morata, who has been under intense criticism after Spain failed to beat Sweden in their opening Euro 2020 game on Monday, June 14.

Alvaro Morata became the talk of the football world when he missed two great chances that would have given Spain the desired lead. But the 28-year-old striker who currently plays for Juventus wasted the chances and denied Spain a perfect start.

After the game, football fans especially those from Spain took to various social media platforms to criticize the striker who could not covert some of the best goalscoring opportunities in the game.

His bad performance at the game summarizes how difficult the Juventus striker has struggled to keep scoring for Spain since the beginning of this year. So far in 2021, he has managed to score a goal for the national team.

In his reaction to the criticism against Alvaro Morata after missing two match-winning chances, coach Luis Enrique insisted that the striker had a great game which means that he didn’t deserve the criticism.

Coach Luis Enrique is furious after Morata missed a goalscoring opportunity in the match against Sweden on Monday.

“I think Alvaro had a great game,” the coach insisted. “Of course we all want to take our chances, but other players had chances too.

“I think he’s used to it, but of course we want to see that support from the fans.

“That’s football though, it would have been nice to dedicate a win to the fans because they were fantastic for most of the game today.

“We are going to analyze this game in detail as we always do. But in this case, I think it’s really clear, we’ve all seen what happened this evening so there’s really not too much to go into.

“We were by far the better team. The opposition tried to hang back, we completely controlled the game and tried to create as many chances as possible.

“We had sufficient chances to win the game. What went wrong? It’s the fact we didn’t take those chances.

“It’s very clear and we all saw it.”

Unlike his form in Spain’s national team, Alvaro Morata had a fair 2020-2021 season at Juventus. In all competitions in the just concluded season, the striker made 44 appearances in which he scored a total of 20 goals and provided 12 assists.

He has been playing for Spain national team since November 15, 2014. Since then, he has made 40 appearances in which he scored 19 goals.

Though he is just 28-year-old, his stay at Juventus is not guaranteed. His contract with the Italian club would expire on June 30, 2021, and he has not reached a concrete agreement with any club at the time of publishing this report.
