Spain Women World Cup goalscorer Olga Carmona learned about her father’s death after she scored the winning goal against the Three Lionesses in the 2023 FIFA Women World Cup.
It was confirmed by the Royal Spanish Federation that the horrible news was broken to Carmona after the match through their statement, saying
“The RFEF deeply regrets reporting the death of Olga Carmona’s father. The soccer player learned the sad news after the World Cup final.”
“We send our most sincere hugs to Olga and her family in this moment of deep pain. We love you, Olga; you are the history of Spanish football.”
After the game, Carmona paid tribute to her father, saying, “And without knowing it, I had my star before the game started.
It was reported that Carmona’s father died on Friday, but the news was kept from the player in order not to distract her from the final preparations against England.
The Spanish star was in jubilation mode after scoring an exceptional goal in the 29th minute to put La Roja ahead, who went on to win the tournament for the first time in the history of women’s football.
After scoring the goal, she lifted her shirt in celebration. After the final, she explained to the press the reason she lifted the shirt, saying, “I did that to honor the mother of my best friend who passed away.”
The England team applied a lot of pressure, but it was not enough to get the equalizer.
Sarina Wiegnam’s side would have lost heavily in the match if not for goalkeeper Mary Earps, who made exceptional saves, including a penalty.
