Former Liverpool owner and Todd Boehly’s bid rival Sir Martin Broughton has revealed what he would have done differently if he owned Chelsea.

The Stamford Bridge club, Chelsea have suffered severe hardship in the first seven months under new owner Todd Boehly, who axed UCL winner Thomas Tuchel out of Stamford Bridge after a poor start to the season, and brought Graham Potter in as his replacement.

Tuchel was sacked on the 7th of September, 2022 after Chelsea’s slow start of the season, drawing with Tottenham, losing to Leeds United and Southampton, and only managed to win one against West Ham in the Premier League new season.

However, the Blues are still struggling to rise from their terrible form despite the new owner employing Potter as coach and spending £600 million infusing new blood into the London club.

And Boehly’s bid rival for Chelsea Sir Martin Broughton has revealed how he would have run the club differently and successfully without firing Thomas Tuchel or spending as much as Boehly outlaid on transfers.

Sir Martin Broughton’s consortium was in the race to buy the Premier League club last year.

Meanwhile, Broughton made it to the final group of potential owners hoping to take over from the Russian owner Roman Abramovich, but the bid eventually failed, with the Stamford Bridge club going to the consortium led by co-owner Todd Boehly.

And during an interview with talk sport, the 75-year-old British tycoon spoke about how he would have run the club differently compared to Boehly’s management and his white elephant project.

Broughton told talk sport: “It would have been different. It’s quite hard to say how different. We certainly wouldn’t have been looking for Tommy Tuchel’s way out, but once you step inside, you might find you’re looking for it.”

“Once you’re inside, things may look different from the outside. I can’t believe for a minute we would have spent as much money.”

The former Liverpool owner Sir Martin Broughton slams Boehly’s outlays after spending on 16 new players, including two loans, with fear that the massive new signings have altered normalcy in the Blues squad.

He added: “We would have been happy to invest in the team, but I think it’s an extraordinary job Potter has got, coping with all of those new players in the team.”

Former Manchester City star Raheem Sterling was signed for £50m, while Marc Cucurella joined from Brighton for £65m.

Boehly also added to his buy list a £70m deal for Wesley Fofana from Leicester and £34 million to purchase Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli.

Ex-Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubmaeyang was also signed from Barcelona for £10m despite being 33, in a deal inferred to be a wasted effort as the striker now sets to leave Chelsea after just one league goal.

However, the American owner Boehly didn’t stop there as he added more players in January, spending more than other clubs during the transfer window.

Boehly acquired Mykhailo Mudryk for £88m, PSV’s Noni Madeuke for £26m, Monaco’s Benoit Badiashile for £35m, and Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez for a £106m British transfer fee.

In disagreement with this exhaustive spending with little or no impact to be proven yet, Broughton noted that he would have taken just one or two players which appears logical in contrast to Boehly’s massive signings.

Broughton concluded: “You can take in one or two players, but you start taking in seven and another seven halfway through the season, it’s difficult to get the right blend.”
