Sergio Ramos has lamented over his costly mistake that handed Barcelona a 1-0 win against Sevilla during their La Liga encounter.
Barcelona reclaimed their spot at the top of the table with a 1-0 victory over Sevilla, thanks to an own goal from former Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos.
Despite Ramos’s excellent performance for Sevilla, Barcelona broke through their defense at Montjuic. In the final stages of the game, Xavi Hernandez made a crucial substitution, bringing on Ferran Torres for Joao Felix.
Sevilla were vehemently resisting Barcelona’s effort until Ramos, of all players, turned the ball into his net to give the Catalans the lead with ten minutes on the clock.
The own goal occurred as Torres’s cross found Lamine Yamal, who inadvertently headed the ball to Ramos’ feet, leaving the defender unable to resist guiding it over the goal line.
Sevilla’s unbeaten run of four games came to an end, while Barcelona and Girona remain the only unbeaten teams in Spain this season.
Ramos’ terrible mistake hurt him deeply, and he has taken to his Instagram page to express his feelings while also claiming that the team will bounce back stronger.
In his post, he acknowledged that the match was difficult due to the result and its circumstances, but praised the team’s performance and attitude, which he believes will help them grow.
He also mentioned that they are now solely focused on the Champions League.
He wrote: “A match that is hurt because of the result and its circumstances, but that strengthens us because of the performance and attitude of the team. We continue to grow and we are already thinking only about the Champions League.”
Sergio Ramos and Lamine Yamal
Nine-year-old Lamine Yamal once served as Ramos’ mascot during a Clasico game in 2016 when Ramos was playing for Real Madrid.
Little did Ramos know, seven years later the same boy who is now 16-year-old would cause him to turn the ball into his own net to gift Barcelona the lead over his beloved Sevilla.
Seven years later, Ramos found himself in a similar situation, bringing delight to Yamal in Barcelona.
Yamal showcased his talent as a standout player on the right wing throughout the game, and his determination eventually led to his success at the expense of the renowned Spanish defender.
What’s next for Ramos and Sevilla?
It is hoped that Sergio Ramos will redeem his mistakes, as he declared, when Sevilla faces PSV in the Champions League campaign on October 3rd.
