Sergino Dest was sent off in USMNT’s CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinal against Trinidad and Tobago and that was a history he wishes he could take back.
Sergino Dest was sent off for two yellow cards within a 20-second gap, both for dissent in the heat of the moment after he shot the ball into the stands and then made some remarks to the official.
While he was walking off the pitch, some of his USMNT teammates blasted him with Tim Ream, who was pissed at his behavior, seen yelling in his face.
Dest’s decision-making at that moment was inexcusable, and Trinidad took advantage of his sending-off as they leveled the game not long after he left the pitch.
Aside from the Shinanigans from the PSV defender Sergino Dest, Gio Reyna had to be substituted and that also added to the loss to Trinidad as USMNT struggled after that.
The USMNT advanced to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Nations League and the 2024 Copa America after losing 2-1 to Trinidad.
Nevertheless, Dest will now likely serve a longer suspension for that match; it is unclear if Gregg Berhalter would decide to punish him further.
Sergino Dest
Sergiño Gianni Dest is a professional soccer player who was born on November 3, 2000, and plays as a full-back for Eredivisie club PSV Eindhoven, on loan from La Liga club Barcelona.
What Happened To Dest?
The full-back, who is presently on loan at PSV, received two yellow cards for misbehavior in the space of twenty seconds before being told to leave the left.
Frustrated by a judgment made by the referee, Dest booted the ball into the stands and then proceeded to clash with the match official immediately after.
Following the game, Dest publicly apologized to his teammates via social media on his personal Instagram account, after he was given a red card in the match against Trinidad and Tobago.
Posting on his page, Sergino Dest said: “I want to apologize to my Teammates, Staff, Fans and whole nation for my behaviour it was unacceptable, Selfish and immature I let my team down! It’s something I have to learn from and it won’t happen again!”
USMNT boss Gregg Berhalter was also pretty critical of Sergino Dest after the game which ended in a 2-1 defeat, despite the fact that they won 4-2 on aggregate.
Dest’s red card means he picks up the unwanted record of being the first US player to be sent off twice in a calendar year since 1990.
He picked up the first red card in 2023 against Mexico in the Nations League semifinal in June although he got an assist in the match before the one against Trinidad and Tobago.
Sergino Dest Stats
Dest has played 13 matches in all competitions for PSV and has only assisted once in these matches though he has played over 1000 minutes.
