Embattled Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali reportedly took a pay cut with Newcastle United following his 10-month ban.
Tonali, 23, joined Newcastle United from AC Milan last summer, signing a five-year contract. The footballing sensation was already beginning to blossom in the English elite division when he suffered a heavy career setback
Italian football authorities, under the aegis of FGIC, slammed the Premier League player with a 10-month for a betting scandal.
As a Premier League player, Sandro Tonali could have escaped FGIC ‘s ban as the latter had no jurisdictional powers to enforce the ban.
To effect the ban, the FGIC had to write world football’s governing body FIFA to extend the ban worldwide. FIFA upheld the plea and Tonali’s ban extended. Hence, the burgeoning midfielder was frozen from the game for 10 months.
The ban which took effect in October 2023 means Sandro Tonali will be ruled out of the rest of the season for Newcastle United.
Meanwhile, he had penned down a five-year contract worth £132,000 weekly. Now, according to the Sun, Newcastle United, who were unfazed with the ban, had to settle for a new agreement with the player to slash his wages.
It is still unclear how much was raked off his wages but sources close to the player revealed he agreed to the deduction since he would be inactive for the club for months due to the ban.
Tonali has served 8 months of his 10-month ban and will be back to with Newcastle United for preseason.
Meanwhile, the English FA also slammed with a two-month suspended ban on Thursday, May 2 for betting on Newcastle United matches after he joined the club.
He was also hit with a £20,000 fine. It is understood the suspended ban by the FA will not affect his return to action after the expiration of his 10-month ban but is a warning sentence to deter him from further breaches.
