San Diego FC Announce The Signing Of Former Manchester United Defender Paddy McNair

San Diego FC announced the signing of former Manchester United defender Paddy McNair as a free agent on a three-year contract. 

The three-year contract is expected to end in June 2027, with the club optioning an additional year.

McNair, who joined San Diego FC on a free transfer after the expiration of his contract at Middlesbrough, has been loaned to West Bromwich Albion until January 2025.

The defender is the fifth player to be signed by the club. San Diego FC have already signed Duran Ferree, Marcus Ingvartsen, midfielder Jeppe Tverskov, and winger Hirving Lozano.

Upon the completion of the signing, the chief officer of the football club, Tyler Heaps, said, “Paddy is another addition to our club that will be invaluable as we prepare for our inaugural season in the MLS. He is a centre-back that is extremely comfortable in possession and has the versatility to play a number of roles within our team.”

“His wealth of experience and leadership as the captain of Northern Ireland will be a tremendous asset to our roster and locker room. We are excited to welcome him to San Diego and have him join our club in January.”

McNair played in the Manchester United Academy before he proceeded to make 27 appearances for the first team. 

The Irish defender spent almost all his career in the Championship, playing for Sunderland and Middlesbrough. 

He joined Sunderland on August 11, 2016, and proceeded to sign a four-year contract with the club. McNair made his debut for the Black Cats on August 13, 2016, when he came on to score an own goal against Manchester City. 

He moved to Middlesbrough on June 26, 2018, signing a four-year contract with the club. McNair made his debut for Middlesbrough on August 7, 2018 against Sheffield United.

He scored his first goal for the club on August 24, 2018 against Millwall in a 1-1 draw.
