Liverpool winger Sadio Mane has matched Cristiano Ronaldo’s record in the UEFA Champions League after scoring a goal in the tournament on Tuesday, April 6, 2022.

On the said date, Sadio Mane traveled with Liverpool to Portugal to take on Benfica in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final game.

During the game, the 29-year-old Senegalese left-winger scored a tap-in after Luis Diaz headed a cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold to him.

The 34th-minute goal doubled Liverpool’s lead in the game 17 minutes after Ibrahima Konaté scored the opener in the 17th minute.

Liverpool went on to beat Benfica 3-1 away from home which gave the Premier League club a huge edge over Benfica ahead of the second leg of the tie on April 13.

After the first leg of the tie in Portugal, Sadio Mane had more than the win to celebrate. He has matched Cristiano Ronaldo’s goals in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages since the 2017-2018 season.

From the 2017-2018 season to the 2021-2022 season, Sadio Mane who joined Liverpool from Southampton for a transfer fee worth €41.20 million in 2016 has scored 13 goals in the UEFA Champions League knock stages. He scored the 13th goal against Benfica on Tuesday, April 5.

Before now, only Cristiano Ronaldo has been so fortunate to score 13 goals in the knockout stages of the tournament since the 2017-2018 season. But the fact that he has not been so fortunate in the tournament in recent times has made it difficult for the 37-year-old Portuguese star who currently plays for Manchester United to increase his goal tally in the knockout stages of the competition.

When asked to comment on the goal he scored against Benfica on Tuesday, Sadio Mane told BT Sport that the main source of his happiness was that his team won the game.

“Like I always say, winning is more important”, Mane said. “I am happy to score the goal but happier that the team scored three goals and we are ready for the next game.”
