Former Manchester United captain, Roy Keane has said that the Red Devils need to sign a “better goalkeeper” over the summer to challenge for the Premier League title next season.
United completed their season third on the log and returned to the Champions League. This has been deemed a successful one under Ole Gunnar Solksjaear‘s full season at the club.
The Old Trafford outfit secured the Champions League berth courtesy of their 2-0 win over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on the last day.
But, Keane, who is a Man United legend remains adamant the club’s current number one, David De Geacontinues to make too many mistakes. Thus, there is a need for
Roy Keane believes a better goaltender.
De Gea committed two schoolboy errors against Chelsea in the semi-final of the FA Cup that saw tame shots from Olivier Giroud and Mason Mount squirm under his arm. Since then, there have been several criticisms of his performance.
Roy Keane ‘sick to death’ over De Gea’s errors
Although De Gea kept his 13th clean sheet of the season against Leicester, which was only three shy of Golden Glove winner Ederson, Keane said he is ‘sick to death’ over them.
Since then, the Spaniard conceded just two goals in the final four games of the Premier League season for the Red Devils. Keane is, however, told Skye Sports adamant that the club must find a replacement if they want to reach the next level.
“I’ve never been a big fan of his. He makes far too many mistakes, big mistakes that cost United big points,” Keane told Sky Sports about De Gea ahead of United’s game against Leicester.
“We talk about recruitment, it’s a difficult part of the game. That’s just my opinion. If Manchester United want to challenge for league titles, they need a better goalkeeper.
“They need a change, they’ve done it before. I don’t know what the big song and dance is about a goalkeeper, Man United have been doing it for years.
“Strikers are dropped or sold, same with midfielders, but for some reason, with goalkeepers, they think we have to stick with the goalkeeper for a bit longer than others because of something they did two or three years ago.
“The game doesn’t work like that. We’ve seen Liverpool get onto another level when they’ve improved the goalkeeper.
“What’s the big deal? If he’s not doing it, he’s making mistakes, then make a change. There are good goalkeepers out there.”
Can Henderson replace De Gea?
Meanwhile Dean Henderson, who is on loan from the club had a successful season with promoted Sheffield United that finished the season 9th. It remains unsure if he will be considered to replace the Spaniard in between the sticks.
Moreover, it’s looking like the Red Devils won’t be replacing De Gea, whose contract expires in 2023 anytime soon.
Solskjaer had also shown plenty of faith in the 29-year-old in recent times and believes he remains a “top keeper”.
