Romelu Lukaku played an important role in ensuring Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku did not consider a move to Chelsea while he was in Belgium.
Jeremy Doku could have been playing for Chelsea if not for the intervention of Romelu Lukaku, who advised him not to join Chelsea.
While he was 15 years old, the winger attracted the attention of a lot of Premier League clubs, including Manchester United and Chelsea.
It was so intense that the club were finding it difficult to keep the winger, but there was a chance when the big Belgian stepped in.
The story was revealed by Anderlecht academy director Jean Kindermens, who said, “I remember taking Romelu into my office about the problem of getting young players to commit to us—Doku most especially.”
However, Lukaku replied, saying “Come on, pass your phone to me; I am going to call him”. Romelu Lukaku was able to convince Jeremy Doku to remain at Anderlecht for a while.
The Belgian left the club in 2020 and moved to Ligue 1 team Rennes at the age of 18. He became an important player in the squad, scoring 12 goals and creating 10 assists in 92 appearances across all competitions.

Lukaku knew too well how difficult it was to break into Chelsea’s starting 11. The AS Roma striker struggled to break into the Chelsea senior team after he joined them from Anderlecht in 2009.
He spent seasons on loan with Everton and West Brom, where he grew to become a very talented player.
However, Chelsea fans would not be happy with Romelu Lukaku’s action due to the fact that the club’s wingers haven’t been able to live up to expectations.
The likes of Mykhaylo Mudryk and Noni Madueke had failed to meet their expectations.
Jeremy Doku could have been Eden Hazard’s replacement for the London club, but Chelsea fans would not be able to see such a player due to Lukaku’s action.
